Tinsukia tense: Former rebel held after attack on illegal settlers

Amid a simmering tension, the Tinsukia police have arrested a group of former ULFA rebels hours after they allegedly led a group of people who set afire three huts belonging to a couple of alleged illegal settlers at a remote hamlet in Burhidihing area.

According to information, former ULFA rebel accompanied by some local residents reached set on fire three huts moments after the people who lived in managed to flee.

Thr arrested former rebels include Jiten Dutta who was alleged to have taken the lead against the attack on these people who came to settle in the riverbank a couple of months back.

Police, army and para military forces are fanning in and around the area to deal with any outbreak of law and order situation.

The Margherita unit of BJP has suspended its president Bhim Karmakar for 5 days in connection with the recent acrimonious situation at a party function in Tinsukia.Party insiders told Assam Times that Karmakar was allegedly involved in the scuffle that took place at the function attended by Siddhartha Bhattacharya where the party workers tried to be flanked by the State president on November 16.
Normal life remains paralyzed on Friday in Tinsukia district following a 24 hour bandh called by the Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad in protest against the assault on one of their leader.Roads in most parts of the district remained completely deserted as vehicles refused to ply during this period. Shops and markets, schools and colleagues, banks and offices remained closed under impact of the bandh.CRPF jawans on Thursday assaulted Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad’s Digboi branch president Prashanta Buragohain at Digboi bereft of any reason.

According to allegation, the police have released Narayan Adhikary even after he was detained acting on the complaint of diesel theft from the residence of Sambhu Singh in the Segunbari area.It is alleged that police spared Adhikari only because of his comfortable relations with a circle of senior policemen apart from a few district administration officials.
