Steps to promote bee keeping in Assam

Assam is set to implement a slew of steps to boost bee keeping. The announcement came up from the department of horticulture and Food Processing ( DHFP) when its commissioner visited the World Food India on Sunday.

The state government would extend all possible support to the farmers concerned for expansion of beekeeping in Assam .

In this context, Pawandeep Singh Kohli, Director, Salt Range Foods Pvt. Ltd met the Director of Horticulture and Food Processing, Assam at World Food India, 2017 and expressed their commitment to promote Bee Keeping among the farmers of Assam.

Salt Range Foods Pvt Ltd is a leading exporter and supplier of Honey sourced from some of the best farms of India. Several entrepreneurs of Assam already associated with this company for knowledge support and buy back policy.

Another company, namely, C K Udyog of Assam , leaded by Lila Charan Dutta has also offering handholding support to the Bee keepers of Assam, said Bakul Saikia, Senior Agricultural Development Officer and Nodal Officer, (Farmers Producer Company ). Around 2500 nos. of farmers already registered as Bee keepers, under the initiative of DHFP, Assam , supported by Rastriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), said Saikia.

Bees provide important natural products and services. They pollinate flowers and therefore play an important part in food production. Most plants are totally dependent on certain types of bees for reproduction.

It is also for this reason that commercial pollination has begun to take shape in the larger agricultural industry.

Among all the bee species, the honeybee is the most economically valuable as it is able to focus on particular plants at a time.It does not pollinate randomly because it targets particular plant species in every outing. A single honeybee can pollinate thousands of flowers daily.

The bee as a pollinator, supports a number of ecosystem services including food chain development without which a lot of plants would die off.
