Asian Women Boxing Championship in Guwahati starts off

The much awaited boxing carnival 4th Asian Women Boxing Championship got off to a colourful start at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex here yesterday evening in Guwahati. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated the boxing extravaganza. Beijing08' Olympic bronze medal winning famed boxer Vijender Kumar along with his teamates Jitender Kumar and Akhil Kumar were the star attractions of the inaugural function.Though 12 counntries had confirmed participation but altogether 11 countries are taking part in the meet leaving Indonesia who did not turnup. The participating country teams - China, DPR Korea, Kazakstan, Korea, Macao, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam and host India - took part in the march past programme in the function while thrice world champion MC Mary Kom took oath on behalf of all the participants. India made a bad start as local girl Pranamika Borah lost to her Chinese opponent Dong Cheng 1-4 at the KNCB Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex .. The bronze medallist in the Turkey world invitational meet in 2005, Pranamika even went pointless in the first and third round.Earlier in the opening bout of the championship Mala Rai of Nepal was beaten by Pin Meng Chien of Chinese Taipei 1-5 in the 46kg category. The boxing meet ends on 28th Sept. 2008. World class infrastructure of the sporting venues after the 33rd National Games has helped Assam to host international events in the city.

The city police has saved the souls of hundreds of people in the city when police defused a powerful bomb beside the bust Machkhowa bust stand on Wednesday afternoon.The bomb was planted beside the Macjkhowa bus stand when the entire area was teeming with hundreds of people. The government has extended its ceasefire with Dima Halom Daogah for yet another year. Hundreds of passengers at the Rajdhani Express got rid of a major tragedy when a powerful bomb missed the target at Matipul in Karbi Anglong district in the wee hours on Wednesday. According to information, the powerful explosion reportedly took place at Matipul in between Khotkhoti and Bokajan rail stations minutes after the Rajdhani Express bound for Guwahati passed the spot. The target was missed but the railway tracts were left heavily damaged. Top ranked police and railway officials arrived in the spot. The blast is suspected to be a handiwork of AANLA. Investigation is on.
Noted litterateur and veteran novelist Dr Rita Chaudhury has been named for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award for his outstanding contribution to the field of literature. Dr Chaudhury, who has already authored Abirat Jatra, Mahajibanor Adharsila, Papiya Tarar Sadhu has recently made one more notable contribution by her Deolangkhui, a novel on the social life of the Tiwa people. Recently the news of six communities demanding ST tag in Assam has bemused me. I have some amount of knowledge regarding the ethnic structure and demography of the region. The CBI tea probing the Assam serial blast visited the blast site at Panbazar on Monday. Led by DIG P Kamraj, the team has been camping in Guwahai to probe the incident that rocked Assam on October 30 where over 90 people lost their limbs. Another team of the agency yesterday visited the blast sites at Kokrajhar, Barpeta Road and Bongaigaon.
