Defying a statewide protest, the Assam government on Monday arrested Akhil Gogoi under the National Security Act in connection to an old case pending against the peasant leader in Kaziranga.
Gogoi, whom Dibrugarh police arrested early this month for allegedly urging the people to remain prepared for an armed conflict with the government, was produced before a lower court which allowed the police to arrest him under the draconian Act that deals with the threat to internal security.
According to sources, he was implicated in the last year’s case pending in Kaziranga where he instigated a section of people to oppose the eviction drive where two protesters died in police firing.
Meanwhile, his arrest under NSA fuells widespread protest and anger where protesters in many rural and urban areas have come out to the streets demanding immediate and unconditional arrest of the peasant leader.
