The National Students Union of India (NSUI) Manipur state on Friday held a protest demonstration here over the death of Pravish Chanam.
The police and his family are still clueless about the mysterious death of the 22-year-old youth from Imphal. Pravish Chanam died under mysterious circumstances at Noida, Uttar Pradesh on September 14 last.
Son of Chanam Jugindro of Uripok Achom Leikai in Imphal West, Pravish Chanam was travelling from Hydrabad to Delhi on September 7 to witness a musical concert at Noida.
After six days his family learnt Pravish Chanam had died, and that the police cremated his body, which was never informed to his family. Three cops from Knowledge Park Police Station have so far been placed under suspension over the incident.
The police station had claimed Pravish Chanam died on September 9 just after the music programme.
According to the post-mortem report, the youth died hardly an hour after he received first aid at the hospital. His body was reportedly found at a spot located about 500 m from the hospital with injuries and bruises all over his body.
It was reported that Pravish was taken to the BR Ambedkar Hospital, Gautam Budh Nagar from the concert venue by the organizers after he suddenly felt unwell during the event.
His family members believe there was dereliction of duty on the part of the Knowledge Park Police Station in Greater Noida as the police there failed to inform the matter to the family members.
His family and the North-East Forum for International Solidarity have demanded that the Government of India order an investigation by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the death of Pravish Chanam.
Activists of NSUI, Manipur state staged the protest in front of the Congress Bhawan demanding justice for late Pravish Chanam.
“The government is still unwilling to take any concrete step in connection with the death. The silence maintained by the government has raised a big question,” union president P Bakimchandra Meitei told newsmen on the sidelines of the protest.
Bakimchandra said injury marks and bruises on his body were testimonies that Pravish Chanam was tortured to death.
He demanded the Manipur government to take immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
