A number of one hundred and thirty one teamsfrom 70 schools of North East India came together to vie for the title of North East Champions at the city-level finals of the Wild Wisdom Quiz 2017 held in the city recently. Runninginto its tenth year, the Wild Wisdom Quiz is the biggest wildlife quiz for school students in Asia and the only one of its kind in India.
Organized by WWF-India the quiz was supported by Discovery Kids and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Some 4170 students from Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh participatedthis season,besides, one wild card entry winning team from North East according to Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, Coordinator, Assam State Office, WWF-India.
Started in 2008 Wild Wisdom Quiz has grown in strength over the last decade and reached beyond the country, with Nepal running its first edition of the quiz in 2017. In India, the Wild Wisdom Quiz is being organized across 817 schools in 14 cities with participation from approximately 50,000 students. Held in the format of a competition, the quiz is a fun way to help children learn more about the environment and also help inculcate in them a sense of responsibility towards the planet. The Middle School winners of City-Level finals from 14 cities of India will go head-to-head with each other at the National Levels to be conducted in New Delhi on October 6, 2017, during the World Wildlife Week. The National Levels shall be conducted by Siddharth Basu, the Quiz Man of India.
Finalists of the Junior level quiz who contested in the final round were from KV Borjhar, Sainik Foundation School, Imphal, DPS Guwahati, APS Tezpur and The Assam Valley School, Balipara. Thereafter, in a closely contested competition conducted by quiz master Abhra Das, Kaizan Minotra (class 5) and Shubhaan Sharma (class 5) Army Public School Tezpur, came out as the Junior level Champions in the North East, City Final. The 2ndposition was claimed by Aayat Hazarika (class 5) and Anikaith Anant Joshi (class 5) of The Assam Valley School, Balipara and 3rdposition by Heetartha Bora (class 3) and Samarjit Das (class 4) of DPS Guwahati.
Finalists of the Middle level quiz were from Maharishi Vidya Mandir 4 Barsajai, Sainik Foundation School, Imphal, Manipur, KV Khanapara, DPS Guwahati and Wild card entry winners Mohixit Goswami (class 7) and Nirnayak Talukdar (class 7). Adhiraj Kar (class 6) and Navaneel Chakraborty (class7) of Delhi Public School, Guwahati came out as winners and NE Champions securing the first position in a stiff competition after various rounds of quiz. The second position begged by Tausif Afreen Hussain (class 7) and Avilasha Kalita (class 7) of Maharishi Vidya Mandir 4 Barsajai, and 3rd position holders are Winson Moirangthem (class 7) and Kshetrimayum Chingkhei Singh(class 6) of Sainik Foundation School, Imphal.
Addressing the students, Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya urged the students to play their role in protecting the earth by following the maxim Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Sanskriti The Gurukul, Guwahati was felicitated with the Best School Award for being the school with the most number of registrations with a whopping 502 students. Amongst the schools that registered for the Poster Making Competition, two posters were shortlisted one each from Royal Global School Guwahati and DPS Guwahati.
Professor Ranjit Choudhury, Advisor, WWF-India AAPSO and A. K. Singha, Director, Royal Global School were present in the event. National Champions of Wild Wisdom 2016, Bhraaz Kashyap and Krishti Nayan Nath from Don Bosco School-Guwahati shared their experience of Wild Wisdom with the participants. A Brochure “Common Birds of Assam” prepared by WWF-India, AAPSO was also released during the event to help readers to learn, identify and appreciate the birds. While the Junior and Middle Level Quiz slowly reaches its finale across the cities, the online version of the quiz, for senior school students, will be open untilOctober 10, 2017.
