National Sports University to start soon

The Manipur government finally decided to start the first session of the yet to be constructed National Sports University (NSU).

The long awaited sports university will be set up at Imphal West’s Koutruk where the Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh paid visit to the site to oversee the preparation process on Sunday.

“We’ve requested the Prime Minister to lay the foundation stone of the National Sports University at Koutruk on the most appropriate day after August 15next,” Biren Singh told journalists on the sidelines of the visit.

“After the foundation laying function, the first session of NSU will start at the temporary site at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal,” the Manipur Chief Minister said.

He said the present location selected for the construction is an undisputed land and that the initial fence erection of the site has been completed.

Earlier, the previous Congress government in Manipur planned to set up the university at Thoubal district’s Yaithibi Loukol but the location had laden with tension over various reasons including land acquisition.

He said construction of office rooms and other requisite infrastructure for the temporary complex of the varsity has been finished and the government sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the purpose.

Works Minister Thongam Biswajit Singh, who was part of the Chief Minister’s team during the inspection visit, stated that the upcoming NSU will benefit a lot to the surrounding areas of the complex besides creating employment avenues for the state.

He said efforts are on to ensure completion of the approach road of the varsity prior to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state.

CM Biren Singh further said the NSU has been a gift to Manipur presented by the Centre in recognition of laurels brought to the country by sportspersons of the state.

He appealed to the people of Manipur to receive the Prime Minister during the proposed Manipur visit and also to join in requesting him to come to the state and lay the foundation stone of NSU.

Later, the Chief Minister visited the construction site of Ibudhou Marjing tourist complex at Heingang Hills in Imphal East.

The complex includes a gigantic polo statue atop Heingang Hill, a cafeteria, a garden, an approach road,  a parking and a Marjing temple

Besides Biswajit, The Chief Minister during the visit was accompanied by Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Letpao Haokip, Chief Secretary RR Rashmi, Commissioner (Works) K Radhakumar, Commissioner (YAS) H Dileep and other senior officials.
