Prof Devy conferred UNB Soldier of Humanity award

Renowned literary critic  Prof. Ganesh N. Devy of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda was presented fourteenth edition of Upendra Nath Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award-2017 at a programme held at ITA Machkowa in Guwahati on Thursday.

The award has been instituted by the Upendra Nath Brahma Trust, is named after Bodofa (Father of Bodo nationalist assertion) Upendra Nath Brahma, who led the Bodo statehood movement spearheaded by the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), which is a highest award presented from Bodos.

The trust conferred the prestigious award to Prof. Devy for his immense contribution towards languages of the tribes in India. Besides, his relentless activism for protection, preservation and development of tribal languages, especially languages of de-notified tribes has really earned him laurels across the globe. His untiring efforts to standby for the cause of tribes and marginalized communities in India are unparallel one. Prof Devy was awarded Padmashri and Sahitya Akademi.

Prof. Amarjyoti Choudhury, former VC of Guwahati University, who graced as chief on the occasion,former Rajya Sabha MP Urkhao Gwra Brahma,Lawrence Islary, general secretary of ABSU presented the award to Prof. Devy in the presence of Bodo leaders, intellectuals, students and youth in large numbers. The award comprises of a memento, citation, cash 1, 00,000; Indi shawl and an Aaronai.

Among others,senior journalists Samudra Gupta Kashyap, Maini Mahanta,Taren Boro,president of Bodo sahitya sabha,Dr Subung Basumatary,chairman of the trust were prominent attendees on the occasion with Adip Kumar Phukan,senior journalist in the chair.

Security forces continue its intensying operation in the area ahead assembly election. Another cadre Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) was apprehended today from Harigaon area under Kokrajhar PS. A 12-years-old youth identified as Som Soren of Santipur Ultapani was died on the spot and another received serious injured following trampled by wild elephant late last night at Ultapani along the Indo-Bhutan border area in Kokrajhar district.  According to villagers, a herd of 4 wild elephants reached the No.2 Santipur village late last night and attacked the villagers where the youth was died on the spot and another received serious injured.
