A marginal let-up in the incessant rains suggests some relief in the overall flood fury in Assam on Wednesday. But fear of more rains might again wreak havoc in 17 flood hit districts where life starts limping back to normal during the last 24 hours after the loss of 77 people apart from properties worth crores of rupees. But unofficial toll is said to have crossed 100.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the current flood waves have hit 23,118 in nine worst hit districts.
The Brahmaputra and its tributaries keep flowing above the danger level in many places where the surging waters have rendered lakhs of people homeless. More than 4,716 people are still sheltering in 19 relief camps.
A seven member Central stock taking team is on visit to the affected districts whom Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia appraised of the situation on Tuesday. Headed by Union home ministry's joint secretary V Shashanka Sekhar, the listened to the chief secretary who highlighted the need to strengthen the 5,000 km long embankments, improve road communication and to chalk out a permanent solution to the flood and erosion problems in the state.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, however, recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and apprised him of the monsoon woes and submitted a memorandum seeking Centre's intervention to mitigate the misery.
