Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti organizes rally in Golaghat
Today the town of Golaghat came to a stand still when nearly ten thousands people all ages marched to the town from Doyang Tengani region which is situated at a distance of 30 Kms from Golaghat town, bearing the scorching heat to attend a mass rally organized by KMSS (Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti). Addressing the rally Akhil Gogoi, secretary of KMSS severely criticized the role of the state govt. in providing land rights to the forest dwellers of the state. He said that the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has already issued direction to the Chief Ministers of every state as per the provisions of Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006 to take necessary steps to provide land rights to the traditional forest dwellers. Accordingly various states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh etc has already formulated guidelines to provide land rights to the traditional forest dwellers but
the Assam Govt. has failed to show its seriousness in this regard. Gogoi also critcised the unparallel treatment given by the Central Govt. towards the flood situation in Assam. He also demanded a Rs.2000 crore package for Assam’s flood and proper rehabilitation of flood affected people.
Speaking on the occasion B.D. Sarma, ex-Vice Chancellor of NEHU and ex-Commissioner of SC and ST Commission, said that “Law is for people, people are not for law”. If it is necessary to safeguard the interest of our farmers an Act can be amended, because it is the duty of the Govt. to understand the plight of its citizen. He also appealed KMSS to take steps to raise their voice for the flood affected people of the state. On the other hand noted leader of farmer’s Land Patta movement Mr. Bijoy Pandey said that the Govt. has failed to perform its duty to its people.
After the rally KMSS took out a large possession in the town and submitted a memorandum through the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat Dist. to the Chief Minister of Assam, Mr. Tarun Gogoi demanding immediate implementation of Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, permanent solution to the flood and erosion problem of Assam, proper built up of embankment and stop construction large river damn projects, providing ENREGA job card to every rural family and fix the daily wage at Rs. 150, check rampant corruption in the Public Distribution System etc.

Nearly 1200 members of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity, Nari Mukti Sangram Samity and Brihattar Tengani Mukti Sangram Samity staged a rail blockade programme at Jamuguri, Furkating and Borpathar at Golaghat District from 11 am to 2 pm on Tuesday, demanding the immediate release of peasant leader and firebrand RTI activist Akhil Gogoi. As a result of the blockade, the movement of Janasatabdi Express, Amritsar Express and a Passenger train was disrupted at Jamuguri, Furkating and Borpathar respectively. The blockade was called off temporarily at 2 pm but the organisations have warned of more strict and severe agitation in the coming days if Akhil Gogoi is not released in the next few days.

Normal life has been affected today in Golaghat following a 12-hour Assam Bandh called by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity. The whole of Golaghat Town were a deserted look during the Bandh. An Assamese lady has been alleged to be burnt by her husband in Bangalore on 19th June. The incident is another gory death caused by increasing dowry demand by the victim’s husband. The victim, Priakhi Baruah, 19, of Balijan in Golaghat District, had married Apurba Saikia of Jamunamukh in Nagaon District, in January this year. Family sources of Priyakhi revealed that the accused Apurba Saikia was harassing the victim for dowry, since their marriage. Election expenditure incurred by contesting candidates of the recently concluded Assam Assembly Election from Golaghat and Khumtai Legislative Assembly Constituencies has submitted their accounts for inspection before the District Election Officer (DEO), Golaghat on 12th and 13th June.
