Yoga Day celebrated

International Yoga Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm here at Patanjali Acharjya Kulam in Garuajhar of Udalguri along the Indo-Bhutan border on Wednesday. Kamali Basumatari legislator of Panery LAC took part in the programme as chief guest. Addressing a gathering on the occasion,Basumatari said that there is no relation of religion with Yoga. Basumatari touched upon several steps which the BJP government in the state has taken for promoting yoga. Bonjar Daimari EM BTC said ,"Yoga is our ancient discipline, it helps strength mind and intellect. We can keep our body free from disease by doing yoga regularly. Rajeev Chowdhury in-charge of Patanjali Assam,Suresh Tanti MCLA BTC,Hemanta Bora Koch of Udalguri district committee AKRSU along with social workers and Patanjali Sevaks were among others present on the occasion.At the event, around 500 participants including students performed yoga. The students also showcased magnificient acrobatic skills .

Son hacks father to death in Udalguri

UDALGURI: A 30-year-old man allegedly hacked his father to death at their house in Barangabari near Dimakuchi in Udalguri district on Saturday night over a trivial dispute. The family members informed the police and handed over the accused.Reportedly, a heated argument ensued  between the deceased Byartha Kujur and accused Santosh Kujur. Sources said Santosh picked up a quarrel with his father over a trivial issue and hacked him to death with a stick in a fit of rage. UDALGURI:The All Assam Minority Students' Union(AAMSU) staged a two-hour sit-in-demonstration in front of DC office in Udalguri on Thursday.The programme was held under the aegis Udalguri district committee of the student body strongly voiced against the purported suggestion by National Register of Citizens (NRC) state coordinator,Prateek Hajela to the Supreme Court to exclude five out of the 15 documents from NRC modalities. Udalguri Election Officer resigns over cash-for-job scam

UDALGURI: Udalguri Election Officer Karpun Patir has resigned from the post over cash-for-job scam. The scam came to light after the Dibrugarh police arrested one Naba Kanta Patir, an engineer, from Dibrugarh after they caught him red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a lady doctor promising a government job on October 27, 2016.  Karpun Patir is the son of former Congress Minister Sumitra Patir. Karpun submitted his resignation letter to the Udalguri Deputy Commissioner on August 19 citing mother's ill health. 37 Bn SSB apprehends 2,seizes Illegal forest products

UDALGURI: The troops of 37th Bn, SSB, Mangaldoi, stationed at Border outpost,Bangrum thwarted a major attempt of timber smuggling. The troops seized one Tata Pickup van near Barmakhuli Bridge along the Indo-Bhutan border in Udalguri on Thursday morning.A consignment of fifty number of wooden Planks were recovered from the vehicle. The troops also apprehended two timber smugglers in this connection who have been identified as Santosh Basumatary (27) and Pradeep Daimari (40)both hailing from Hagramari village under Harisinga P.S in Udalguri. The seized items were later handed over to Forest Office Nonaikhuti, Udalguri for further legal action.
