Birsa Munda death anniversary observed

The 117th death anniversary of renowned tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda was observed in Nonaipara T.G. under Udalguri district of Assam on Friday, May 9 by the Munda Samaj Primary Committee. The program started with the hoisting of the Munda Samaj flag and a floral tribute at the Martyr tomb.

Francis Horo, Udalguri District Community Cultural Secretary in his speech said “Munda rallied the tribals to fight against the forceful land grabbing carried out by the British government which would turn the tribals into bonded labourers and force upon them abject poverty. Known as 'Dharti Abba' or the Earth Father, Bisra Munda stressed on the need of the tribals to study their own religion and not forget their cultural roots. He influenced his people to relaise the importance of owning their land and asserting their right upon them”

Defying scorching heat the workers and listened with calmness and the speeches. Sukhdev Munda and Albinus Surin, President and Secretary respectively organized the program. Mr. Kanu Ergu, Advisor Paneri Ancholic Munda Samaj Committee also graced the occasion and paid tribute.

The mysterious death of an elephant calf casts no less spell of shadow in Udalguri on Monday. According to Ranjit Tanti, a wildlife activist, the calf, aged around 8, was found dead at a paddy field in Jorpukhuri village under Nonai forest range. Body of one Bikash Munda (18), an Adivasi youth was recovered Monday morning in No.1 sonajuli area under Dimakuchi, Udalguri. Police recovered the body from his uncle’s house and further investigations are on.   It has been reported that Bikash Munda son of Rantu Munda had gone to sleep at his uncle’s house adjacent to Nengta Bodo’s house who have fled from their residence since morning.
