Assam flood situation grim; KNP under surging waters

The over all flood situation in Assam continues to be grim on Monday and instead some new areas have come under the surging waters of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. One person was drowned and seven embankments were washed away during the last 24 hours forcing the authorities to press army into relief and rescue operations in the flood hit areas,

According to information, the body of one Jahidul Islam was found at Pubkonia village under Rangiya subdivision after the swollen Puthimari submerged at least 100 villages having a population of nearly 50,000 on Sunday. The army used speedboats and helicopters as a full scale rescue and relief operation was launched in lower Assam.

The road link with the rest of the country -- National Highway 31 -- was under sheets of water at Rangiya bringing vehicular traffic to a grinding halt. The situation was serious in other districts as well.

According to Chief Conservator of Forest (wildlife) B S Bonal, over 50 per cent of the Kaziranga National Park has been submerged. This has forced the animals of the world heritage site to migrate to the nearby Karbi hills.

Traffic movement on the adjoining National Highway have been regulated to avoid accidents as the animals tend to migrate from the park to the higher places in Karbi Anglong district by crossing the road.
