Lifer for Dimasa rebels for terror funding

A special NIA court on Tuesday sentenced life imprisonment for two top Dimasa rebel leaders along with an elected member of an autonomous council in Dima Hasao district in connection with a sensational terror funding case a couple of years back.

NIA special court judge Robin Phukan announced the quantum of punishment a day after the court convicted altogether 15 people for siphoning off an astrological amount of money meant for development in the hills district much to the benefit of a local rebel group.

Pronouncing the judgment, the court announced lifer thr then DHD military chief Juel Garlosa and Niranjan Hojai who was the outfit’s chairman who managed to get the council’s fund procure arms to be seized with money in cash.

RH Khan, one of the main convicts, has been jailed for twenty years on Tuesday a day after the court convicted the additional director of social welfare department in two cases.

Another person who would have to spend his life in jail is none other than Mohet Hojai, the chief executive member of the then North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council who helped the funds reach the rebels.

Karuna Saikia, the engineer has been jailed for eight years while contractorbPhahendra Hojai has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for twelve years. Same quantum of punishment is applicable to Babul Kemprai for eight years.

The court further has announced rigorous imprisonment of Parth Warisa, Jibangshu Paul, Ashingro Warisa, Vanlalchana have been jailed for twelve years. Golon Daulagapu, Vanlalvhana, Malsamwkimi, Debates Bhattacharya have been sentenced to ten years rigorous imprisonment

In its first two cases bearing No RC 01&02/2009/NIA/DLI, registered a couple of weeks after it was set up, the court convicted DHD rebels Niranjan Hojai, Juel Garlosa the then Chief executive member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council Mohet Hojai, his associate Golon Daulagapu, government officers RH Khan, Karuna Saikia, Jibangsu Paul apart from two contractors namely Phajendra Hojai and Jayanta Ghose.

Later, the DHD(j) rebels came back to the national mainstream and joined political parties. R H Khan, the social welfare department officer is still languishing  in jail.
