The next Saturday evening OPD clinic at Guwahati Press Club will be conducted by a well-known kidney ailment expert from Manipal Hospital Bangalore. Dr Sankaran Sundar, senior consultant Nephrologist and head of international kidney transplantation program of the hospital will be available for free consultations to member-journalists of the press club along with their dependents. The camp, organized under the series of 'Evening with a Doctor' programs, will begin at 2 pm on 13 May 2017 and continue till 4 pm.
Earlier on 6 May senior gynecologist from Apollo Chennai Hospital, Dr A Vinutha graced the camp exclusively organized for the women journalists along with the spouses (and daughters) of Guwahati Press Club members at the club premises. Prior to it, Dr Vinutha also delivered a talk on various women related ailments and their preventions at the club auditorium.
It may be mentioned that eastern India’s one of the pioneer press clubs launched the unique healthcare initiative last year. Assam’s Dispur Hospitals initially supported the endeavour with raising a doctor’s chamber at the club premises in August 2016. The city based hospital under the leaderships of Dr Jayanta Bardoloi also conducted the first episode of evening OPD clinics.
Till date a number of practicing doctors from Medanta-the Medicity Hospital, Apollo Chennai Hospital, GNRC Group of Hospitals, Down Town Hospitals, Narayana Super-Specialty Hospitals, Swagat Super-Surgical Institute, Sankaradeva Nethralaya Guwahati, Wintrobe Hospital, Barthakur Clinic, Nemcare Hospital, Rahman Hospitals, Sun Valley Hospital, Sight First eye-clinic, Government Ayurvedic College, MMC Panbazar, Institute of Dental Science & Research Center etc attended the camps.

Governor J B Patnaik said that the government's counter insurgency operations have fetched dividends where the republic day boycott call was defied. In his address after unfurling the national flag in Khanapara in Guwahati, he said that steps are being taken to bring about overall socio-economic development in the state.

Normal situation prevailed on Republic Day on Saturday. Trains and air services operated as usual though long distance and city private buses kept off the roads as the transport operators gave holiday to their staff on account of R-Day. National flags were seen fluttering in banks, educational institutions, etc., remained closed. Buses, private taxis and autorickshaws of state-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) plied as usual. Defying militant diktat, Republic Day was celebrated across the stat with much fanfare and cultural extravaganza. A powerful Improvised Explosive Devices was recovered ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in Darrang district on Thursday.The bomb was found near the Mangaldoi police station and Republic Day parade ground in the morning. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that the Army court had taken a lenient view of the crime. He told reporters in Jorhat that he would urge the defence ministry to review the case to ensure proper justice to the 19-year-old victim. According to Gogoi, the army court has been insensitive to the seriousness of the crime and has taken a lenient view.He said that imprisonment for only three months is far less than the heinous crime committed by the armyman.
