Truckload of dogs rescued in Samaguri

The demand for dog meat in Nagaland is greater than its supply, so live dogs are illegally trafficked there from Assam. However, a major effort of these traffickers was foiled on Thursday night when locals along with the cops in Samaguri in Nagaon successfully managed to rescue 75 dogs from the clutches of the ruthless dog trade. Four traffickers were also arrested in this process.

Some locals of Samaguri managed to catch a truck carrying 75 dogs at Samaguri Bazar area According to sources at around 8.30 in the evening which was going towards Dimapur from Rupohihat, Nagaon. The four traffickers have been identified as Raju Momin, Prakash Momin, Sanio Sangma and Paobeng Sangma. All of them hail from Sokolating in Karbi Anglong.

The NGO ‘People for Animals’ who have been playing an important role in fighting the dog trade were also informed. Sangeeta Goswami, Chairperson of the NGO told 'Assam times,' ‘Unfortunately, 22 out of the 75 dogs have collapsed. They were kept in really pathetic condition. We have sent the remaining dogs to our shelter home. The dog trade is very active in Nagaland. In 2008, I recall rescuing around 80 dogs from Khetri which were also being taken to Nagaland for consumption. Dog meat is sold there for about Rs 400/kg.
