Gogoi bats for 1971

Amid the escalating controversy over the cut off year to detect and deport the immigrants from Assam former chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday came in strong support of 1971.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati Gogoi the demand to review the cut off year might trigger fresh violence in the state which nobody wants.

“Nearly thirty years have passed since the Accord was signed with 1971 as the cut off year. The growing demand for a change after so many years would trigger violence afresh. Let the Accord be implemented in letter and spirit,” said Gogoi.

Taking a dig at his predecessor PK Mahanta, Gogoi said how he was put on pressure by the Centre to accept 1971. “Yes, I admit the Centre put pressure on him. But why should he accept him? Why did not he refused? ,” said Gogoi.

His statement assumes significant a day after the Jamiat strongly advocated 1971 as the cut off year to detect and deport the Bangladeshi immigrants.
