Chief minister Sarbanabda Sonowal on Tuesday assured a delegation of six ethnic groups of sympathetic consideration of their demand for ST status a day after they openly raised doubtover the government intention.
Sonowal who met the delegation at the Assam Bhawan in the morning assured the delegation that the state and centre will keep the promises by according ST status.
The delegation representing the six ethnic groups Ahom, Koch, Chutia, Muttock, Adivasi and Moran were unhappy on Monday after attending the tripartite meeting presided over by union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju which remained inconclusive.
The much awaited status report id expected to reach the government by June 30 to help the highest level clear the decks.
"The government is waiting a report by June 30 to proceed with the deal. The government is delaying it. It us playing with our emotions and the consequences would not be well,” said Tai Ahomleader Aswini Chetia after tne meeting on Monday.
Hiteswar Barman who represented the Koch Rajbanshis also called it a disappointing one where the Assam government wad represented by senior minister Chandra Mohan Patowary.
Patowary justified the delay saying that the Singla Committee could not submit the report as he went on retirement. “Now Reena Mitra is examining it who is expected to submit the report by June,” said Patowary.

The Assam Secretariat and other offices have been declared as a protected area. A grenade explosion rocked Belshri railway station in Sonitpur district on Friday. But there was no report of any injury. At least five persons were killed when a the vehicle carrying them collided head on in a dumper Palashbari area in the outskirt of Guwahati on Friday.The shocking accident took place in the afternoon at Bhagawatipara where a women died on the spot.
