Vital clause to elude in Assam Acord talks
The All Assam Students Union is all set to hold its tripartite talks with Delhi and Dispur on April 25 to ensure a speedy implementation of the Assam Accord in letter and sound spirit.
But the main clause of the historic Accord is unlike to dominate the talks in the capital to be chaired by Union home minister Rajnath Singh in view of a set of petitions before the Supreme Court challenging 1971 as the cut off date to detect and deport the immigrants.
Barring this principal clause, the tripartite talks is set to discuss the measures to stop infiltration from across the Indo-Bangla border and constitutional safeguards for the indigenous lot.
AASU has already dispatched a delegation consisting of Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya, Basanta Deka, Dipankar Nath and Lurinjyoti Gogoi to participate in the talks.
The sudden initiatives to hold the talks assumes significance when the Supreme Court constituted bench is preparing to hear a set of petitions challenging 1971 as the cut off year to detect and deport the immigrants as agreed by the student body in the Assam Accord, 1985.

An influential student body in Arunachal Pradesh threatened to take the resort of China in protest against the Supreme Court’s recent judgment for citizenship to the Chakma-Hajong refugees. Students from Arunachal Pradesh hit the streets the New Delhi on Friday in protest against the Supreme Court's judgment granting citizenship to Chakma and Hajong refugees from Bangladesh living in the north eastern state.Holding placards in their hands, hundreds joined the protest organized by the All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union while some others shouting slogans not to make the state a dumping ground of refugees.Protesters told Assam Times that they have been tolerating injustice for years. “China repeatedly claims Arunachal Pradesh. The Delhi government is preparing to set up the North East Support Cell and Monitoring Committee in the national capital. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal discussed it with Assam and Nagaland Governor P B Acharya in New Delhi on Tuesday. The membership issue was figured in the discussion at the Nagaland House. The Supreme Court has rejected a plea for Central observers to monitor the verification process of NRC application. A division bench of the Court comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Rohington Fali Nariman rejected the plea by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and authorised NRC nodal officer Prateek Hajela to use the gazetted officials in the process if need be. The court, however, asked Hajela to submit a report on the work completed so far covering the verification of application forms, aims and objectives, field verification reports.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended the date for publication of the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) by March 1 next year. A division bench of the court consisting of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and R F Nariman further asked coordinator Prateek Hajela to file a status report on November 11. The bench had decided to continue monitoring the implementation of its directions.
