The Gauhati High Court has quashed a recent judgment where 61 people were asked to leave the country. Hearing a writ petition filed by some of these people on Thursday, a division bench of the court asked the petitioners to submit their documents before lower court to prove their Indian citizenship.
The division bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice J Chalameswar and Justice Hrishikesh Roy quashed the order but asked the petitioners to submit their documents before foreigners’ tribunal to prove their Indian citizenship.
The court further asked the petitioners to surrender before the Barpeta Superintendent of police by August 22 saying that they had not cooperated with the court in the earlier cases.
It may be recalled that on July 25, 2008, the Gauhati High Court had passed a significant judgment asking altogether 61 people to leave the country saying they were illegal Bangladeshi migrants. Eighteen of these people challenged the order with a writ petition before a division bench.

A day after the powerful blast, an eerie silence is prevailing in Paltanbazar even as the police have claimed a major breakthough into the incident. One person died on the spot while a truck ran over him early morning on Saturday in Bagang are in Bihali.
