Library automation workshop held

Assam Don Bosco University, (Assam) together with Indian Statistical Institute, (Bangalore) jointly organized a three day workshop on "Open Source Software for Library Automation" at ADBU Azara campus, from 23rd to 25th of January 2017.

Pro Vice-Chancellor of Assam Don Bosco University, Guwahati Fr. Joseph Nellanatt graced the occasion alongside the chief guest Prof. Mahendra Nath Bora, Retired Librarian of Tezpur University; Guest of honour Dr. W.S. Devnath, Librarian of Gauhati University; Chair person Prof. A.R.D. Prasad, DRTC, Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore and Prof. Basil Koikara, Registrar, Assam Don Bosco University.

A total of 23 Library & Information science professionals, including the organizers, from various parts of North-Eastern states, members of LIS community participated in the workshop.

“The Workshop emphasized on the Open Source Software (OSS) that has taken the computing world by storm. Its contribution to every scientific field is enormous and library and information science field is no exception. In fact, in many a case Open Source Software (OSS) is superior to commercial equivalents,” said Chanlang Bareh a participant in the workshop.

The purpose of the three-day workshop was to impart practical knowledge to participants on the use of open source tools in libraries.

The open source software ‘Koha’ that deals with library management was introduced and taught with hands-on practice. The workshop also included lectures/practical hands-on by experts like Prof. A.R.D. Prasad, (DRTC) ISI, Bangalore; Prof. Devika P. Madalli. (DRTC) ISI, Bangalore; Dr. Sunita Barve, NCI, Pune; Dr. F. Sumer, Deputy Librarian, NEHU, Shillong & Dr. Gautam Kr Sarma , IDOL, Guwahati. Their contribution helped widen the knowledge in related topics of digital libraries and tools to build up and manage digital collections.

The workshop aimed at strengthening libraries in North East India through capacity building in cutting edge areas of library automation and digital collection management.

The valedictory ceremony took place on the third day, 25th January 2017 at 2:00pm with several representatives such as Prof. Narendra Lahkar, Dept. of Library & Information Science, Gauhati University along with the guest of honour Prof. Sanjay Kr. Singh, Head of Department for Library & Information Science, Gauhati University.
