As the nation pays homage to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on his 121st birth anniversary on 23 January, Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit led the people of the State in paying rich tributes to the patriot of patriots at a function held in the city.
Governor Purohit while paying rich tributes to the great hero commented that ‘in the parlance of independence struggle Netaji would always be remembered with highest degree of reverence for his immense contributions to the nation’.
“Netaji’s sacrifice for the freedom of the country was colossal. He is a leader personified with unparallel courage and charisma,” said the Governor.
Synchronising with the programme, Netaji Garima awards were presented to veteran singer Sudakshina Sharma and media personality Nava Thakuria. Guwahati mayor Mrigen Sarania, East Guwahati legislator Siddhartha Bhattacharjee, former legislator Robin Bordoloi, Padmashree Ajay Dutta also spoke on the occasion.
Accepting the award, journalist Thakuria commented that the essence of Netaji would remain an integral part of Indian nationalism. He however regretted that often a politician of Uttar Pradesh is termed as Netaji, which should be vehemently opposed. The title Netaji, like Bapuji for Mahatma Gandhi, should not be spared with anybody in the world. He also urged New Delhi to pursue with the Myanmar government to preserve all memorials related to Netaji and Indian National Army in that country.
