Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) expressed utter shock at the murder of another journalist in the country within a fortnight. The Assam based media rights body demands proper investigation into the murder of Karthigai Selvan, a Tamil Nadu based scribe, was hacked to death by the goons at Sattur locality on 9 January.
Selvan (40), who worked for Tamil magazine titled Naveena Netrikkan, left behind his wife and two sons. He becomes the second victims till date this year as India lost Brajesh Kumar Singh (28) to assailants in Samastipur locality of Bihar on 3 January last.
The largest democracy in the globe lost six journalists last year, whereas the populous country witnessed the murder of five & two journalists respectively in 2015 & 2014. India lost 11 journalists to the perpetrators in 2013 including three newspaper employees from Tripura.
The JFA, while apprehending that India would slip to a worst place for working journalists if the frequency of journalist’s murder cases continues, also reiterated its old demand for a national action plan to safeguard the media persons and ensure justice to the victim families.
