Assam in grip of AIDS

The killer AIDS seems to have taken a deep grip in Assam with 928 new HIV cases.

According to the statistics available with the Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS), the disturbing scene has come to light when more and more people have come for test.

Kamrup (Metro) alone has the highest HIV positive cases which stands at 38 per cent to be followed by Cachar, Dibrugarh and Nagaon districts.

ANC attendees basically hail from Karimganj, Tinsukia and Karbi Anglong while Cachar and Sonitpur —record more than one per cent HIV prevalence.

According to the experts, since Assam is the gateway to the north east, obviously it is the highly vulnerable for HIV transmission where many young people keep going to the metropolitan cities to do unprotected sex.

Apart from it, many female sex workers from West Bengal and Nepal keep visiting Assam for employment who are involved in this risky behavior.
