Drive against Bangla immigrants: Assam takes up to the cudgel

The quick deportation of Kamaluddin acting on the landmark judgement of the Gauhati High Court has touched off a seismic wave of reaction across the state. AASU, AJYCP, BJP have endorsed it while NCP would have been happy if he was interrogated for obtaining some vital information in terms of illegal influx from across the border. But the AUDF has made it plain that they will not remain mute if the genuine Indian citizens are harassed in the name of detecting the illegal Bangladeshis.

Nagaon police on Tuesday have picked up five Bangladeshi immigrants from Doboka area after being detected by the Gauhati High Court. According to Nagaon police superintendent Nitul Gogoi these people will be pushed back to Bangladesh in a day or two after completing the legal formalities.

This was followed by arrest of five more such illegal Bangladeshi people on Tuesday at Haloating area in Amguri in upper Assam's Sivasagar distirct. These people were arrested by border police with the support of AASU and AJYCP activists. Moreover, AASU and AJYCP activists have arrested more than 70 such Bangladeshi people in different parts of Titabor, Sorbhog, Nagaon on Tuesday.

Caught in this crucial juncture, Assam United Democratic Front has said the way the drive against these Bangladeshi people are being carried out is bound to hurt the sentiments of the religious minority people of Assam.

Addressing a press conference AUDF president Badaruddin Ajmal and his working president Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Chaudhory said AASU,AJYCP and the minority organisations should unitedly launch such drive agaist the Bangladeshi immigrants. "They should hold talk before going for such strike," said Badaruddin adding that the minority people should be taken into confidence. “We want all the illegal Bangladeshis must go but in the same breath we will not remain silent if the minority peoples are targeted,” said Ajmal.

On the other hand, the Assam unit of the Nationalist Congress Party flayed the government for quickly deporting Kamaluddin saying police have lost some vital information on Bangladeshi infiltration while he was not interrogation. Talking to reporters, NCP leaders said a section of MLAs, ministers along with some bureacrates have been behind the racket to issue him citizenship. "Police could have interrogated how and when he managed to get citizenship. But could not. It is possibly for the fact that he was quickly deported fearing some startling revelation," they said.

In yet another development, there is an aroused demand for arrest of AMSU leader Abdul Aziz for his recent comment on the high court verdict where the minority student leaders termed the verdict as a politically motivated. AASU, AJYCP, BJP along with some lawyers have demanded immediate arrest of Aziz citing it a case of legal offense while he passed an unfair comment on a high court judgment.
