Asia-Pacific Forum of Environmental Journalists (APFEJ) expresses concern over the ongoing initiative to block a tributary of Brahmaputra inside Tibet for a massive Chinese hydro project and urged the Chinese regime in Beijing to remain cautious about its impacts on lower riparian localities in India and Bangladesh.
The Chinese government run news agency reported recently from Beijing that a hydro project at Xigaze/ Shigatse on Xiabuqu river (a tributary of Yarlung Zangbo, the Tibetan name for Brahmaputra), inside Tibet was coming up involving an investment of USD 740 million. The construction of the expensive project began in June 2014 and it is scheduled to be completed by 2019.
“The outline of China’s 12th Five Year Plan indicates that few more hydropower projects on the mainstream of the Brahmaputra river in Tibet Autonomous Region have been approved for implementation,” added the report.
The forum of environmental journalists, headquartered at Dhaka appealed to New Delhi and Dhaka regimes to firmly deal with the issue pursuing the Beijing administration promptly. The APFEJ also advocated for an effective water treaty among all the countries in the Himalayan region urgently.

Guwahati: The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I) has alleged a nefarious conspiracy by police and the army to crush their spine, engaging a section of youths who were dispatched to the jungles to join the rebel outfit.
