The alleged violations of civil rights are set to dominate the huge civil rights summit in New Delhi on Wednesday. Manipur iron lady Irom Sharmila is set to steal the march when she would be participating in the opening session of the convention organized by the Global Youth Peace Festival (GYPF).
The summit is expected to release a general appeal to the ruling class and the people to honour the civil rights saying that the violation of civil rights would do more harm than good. “It would be our clarion call for restoration of civil rights and peace,” an organizer told Assam Times in New Delhi two days ahead of the event.
Sharmila, who broke her decade long fast recently arrived in the capital on Monday to participate in the epoch making summit of the peace crusaders.
Representatives from Syria, Liberia, Libya, Afghanistan, Pakistan have also arrived in New Delhi to attended the event.
The situation in Manipur has reached a critical point with the imposition of a total curfew in Imphal following a series of violent incidents that have gripped the state. On November 16, 2024, unrest erupted as irate mobs targeted properties belonging to public representatives, including state ministers and MLAs. The violence prompted immediate action from the authorities, resulting in the arrest of 23 individuals involved in acts of arson and ransacking in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Bishnupur districts. Recovered from these individuals were a .32 pistol, seven rounds of SBBL, and eight mobile phones, indicating the severity and premeditation of the unrest.
