Sir,

As citizens of this country we register our deep anxiety and distress at the proposed amendment of the Citizenship Act under consideration of the Joint Select Committee of Parliament. Whatever humanitarian consideration prompted the proposed amendment granting citizenship to persons belonging to minority communities namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, it is going to be highly inimical to the indigenous people of Assam and to the federal structure of the state.

At the moment, based on Assam Accord, at the intervention of the Supreme Court of India and on the instruction of the Central government, the Government of Assam is engaged in intensive updating of the National Register for Citizens (NRC) to include people permanently residing in the state till 24th March 1971 and to treat them alone as genuine citizens of the country.

The present attempt of the Central Government to extend citizenship beyond the cutoff date of 24th March, 1971 is not acceptable to the people of Assam. The state of Assam is already overburdened with high influx of foreign nationals from Bangladesh, causing serious economic and social distress and identity crisis for the indigenous communities of Assam. Under these circumstances, the proposed amendment poses an existential threat to the existing indigenous communities. 

In view of the above, we request you to withdraw the proposed amendment, or at the very least to exempt the state of Assam from the purview of the proposed amendment to the Citizenship Act.

Further, we request you to permit the people of Assam to submit their views in their own mother language in view of the fact that neither English nor Hindi is widely known among the indigenous communities of Assam.

Repolling in progress in 6 booths

Assam goes to repolling in thee assembly constituencies.Polling began at 6 booths from 8 in the morning on Monday in Bhawanipur, Rongia and Udalguri districts. 7 Manipur Rifles jawans killed in ambush

The MLA visited Phungyar district to participate at a function. The personnel who were killed in the attack include a post commander and a driver and the convoy belonged to 1st and 6th Manipur Rifles, according to police sources.

Cong to remain satisfied with 50 seats

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is confident of winning over 60 seats in the assembly polls. But the poll pundits of the ruling party are sure of maximum 50 seats only. RTI exposes misuse of OBC certificates in Imphal

An RTI activist has revealed misuse of OBC certificates by sons and daughters of some high-ranking Government officials just to sneak into the state Home Department. Laishram Sanatombi of Yairipok Bishnunaha, Imphal East sought certain information through RTI from the state Home Deparment and the Imphal West Deputy Commissioner on the DPC held last year for recruitment of 72 women SI’s. While seeking information Sanatombi was able to discover about this. This was informed by RTI activist W Joykumar during a press conference held at Imphal on Monday. Stage set for Second phase of Assam Assembly polls on Monday

Assam is all set to go to the second and next phase of assembly polls on Monday. Altogether 96,77,113 voters are set to exercise their franchise to decide the fate of596 candidates --449 men and 47 women who are in the fray for 62 seats. No bandh to oppose PM visit: ULFA

Once again Ulfa springs surprise. In a significant move that gives Congress some sort of relief, the banned outfit has decided not to give bandh call to disrupt the visitofprime minister Manmohan Singh slated for April 7. This was what Ulfa publicity wing leader Arunodoy Dohotiya announced at a statement e-mailed to assamtimes on Tuesday. The announcement further suggests that ULFA will not oppose the visit of Dr Singh on April 11 to cast his vote in Dispur. Assam records high turnout in first phase of polling

Over 85 per cent voters excercised thier franchize in the first phase of assembly polls in 62 constituencies covering 13 districts on Monday. Amid a mammoth security arrangement, polling began at 7 in the morning in over 11,000 booths which ended as soon as the clock struck at 3 in the afternoon.
