Sir,

As citizens of this country we register our deep anxiety and distress at the proposed amendment of the Citizenship Act under consideration of the Joint Select Committee of Parliament. Whatever humanitarian consideration prompted the proposed amendment granting citizenship to persons belonging to minority communities namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, it is going to be highly inimical to the indigenous people of Assam and to the federal structure of the state.

At the moment, based on Assam Accord, at the intervention of the Supreme Court of India and on the instruction of the Central government, the Government of Assam is engaged in intensive updating of the National Register for Citizens (NRC) to include people permanently residing in the state till 24th March 1971 and to treat them alone as genuine citizens of the country.

The present attempt of the Central Government to extend citizenship beyond the cutoff date of 24th March, 1971 is not acceptable to the people of Assam. The state of Assam is already overburdened with high influx of foreign nationals from Bangladesh, causing serious economic and social distress and identity crisis for the indigenous communities of Assam. Under these circumstances, the proposed amendment poses an existential threat to the existing indigenous communities. 

In view of the above, we request you to withdraw the proposed amendment, or at the very least to exempt the state of Assam from the purview of the proposed amendment to the Citizenship Act.

Further, we request you to permit the people of Assam to submit their views in their own mother language in view of the fact that neither English nor Hindi is widely known among the indigenous communities of Assam.

Action against dissident leaders: Singh

The dissident Congress legislators would have to face action if they proceed with the practice.AICC General secretary Digvijaya Singh told reporters in Guwahati on Saturdaythat that the party would take action if a member is found to have violated the partyline. Diggy visit over, leaves Guwahati

AICC General secretary Digvijaya Singh outrightly denied voice of dissidence within the Congress legislators and urged the party leaders and workers to be prepared for the next Lok Sabha polls.In his address at the party’s executive body meet in Rajiv Bhawan on Saturday morning, Singh said that its time for the party workers to remain prepared for the polls. Only Singh, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita spoke in the pact meeting. This was much to the utter disappointment of the dissident legislators who have been vocal of Tarun Gogoi and a few of his trusted ones. After holding the meeting, Singh left for New Delhi along with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Sensational arms seizure in Guwahati

Despite heavy presence of security forces Guwahati till remains a safe transit route for arms smugglers.Guwahati police seized a huge cache of arms and weapons from the Paltanbazar area on Thursday evening. These include 8 pistols. Four persons including a woman were arrested for the seizure from their possession.    

No off campus PhD

The Assam government will go for quality parameters under which, off-campus PhD degrees will not be recognised during recruitment and promotion of faculty.Even serving faculties with off-campus PhD degrees who have got time-scale promotions during recent years will be affected. Notably, in the past few years we have seen a rising trend of research scholars opting for universities where rules are relaxed and there is less academic pressure.

AIUDF slams Dispur on minority

All India United Democratic Front in Assam accused the Congress- led state government of failing in implementing minority welfare schemes. During Question Hour, AIUDF MLA Abdur Rahman Ajmal raised the issue of fund allocation under Multi-Sectoral Development Programme (MSDP) during the 11th Five Year Plan in 13 minority concentrated districts of Assam.

Rape victim dies in Karimganj

In yet another incident of rape, a 29-year-old woman died after being brutally raped and dumped by a driver in Silchar on Thursday. The incident took place when the woman and her husband were travelling by a private vehicle from Bolpui town of Mizoram to Lumding in on Wednesday when the driver, feigning problem in the vehicle, asked the man to push it, they said. As soon as the man got off, the driver sped away with the woman inside.

Pan dealer arrested

Stung by incessant criticism Guwahati police on Thursday arrested a businessman charging him with holding syndicate.Popularly known as Naanka, the businessman was nabbed by police at 2-30 in the afternoon. His arrest comes a day after police raided a house in Beltola area for holding a coal syndicate in Nalbari.     

Digvijay Singh on stock taking visit

AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh is on a three days visit to Guwahati amid speculation of an effort to mend differences within the ruling party.The dissident ministers, parliamentary secretaries and MLAs are likely to reveal their resentment before Singh on Friday. Immediately after landing at the Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, the AICC general secretary in charge of Assam affairs drove to the Hotel Green wood Resort to hold talks with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and party president Bhuibneswar Kalita. Dissidence is believed to have come up in the crucial meeting along with some other issues. The dissident camp is all set to raise the issue Friday.     ...

Action against fake companies

Stern action awaits fake financial institutions. Disclosing this in the Assam assembly on Thursday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Nilomoni Sen Deka said that as of March 6, 2013, a total of 192 cases had been filed against 117 such companies. He said that police have also seized 106 bank accounts and Rs 93.81 lakh. He said that this was apart from seizure of property worth Rs 24.28 crore and six bighas of land have also been seized from fake financial companies.
