Choudhury takes over as Kokrajhar DC

Bibekananda Choudhury on Thursday took over as Kokrajhar DC office after he was welcomed by many officals and organizations. Choudhury succeeded Madhav Prasad Sarma, who was shifted to the department of revenue and disaster management at Dispur.

After assuming his office he said that all round development and integration in the district would be top priority in his responsibility. He has sought cooperation from all sections of communities while bringing development and unity in the district. He has emphasized of more integrity and prosperity through building a healthy society in the district.

“I will stress more to bring good development and integration among all sections of communities to build a healthy society”, Choudhury added.

Police, army escape grenade attack

A joint team of army and police had a narrow escape in Sivasagar district on Wednesday when suspected ULFA militants attacked them with a grenade.

The incident took place at Nimonagarh in Charaideo sub division when the militants threw a powerful hand grenade at a joint team of police and army during a combing operation in the wee hours. But the grenade did not explode much to the major relief of the security forces.

Combing operation is in progress to nab the perpetrators who left the spot immediately after the abortive attempt. No outfit has so far owned up the responsibility. But sources called it a handiwork of ULFA’s Paresh Baruah faction which is active in this area bordering Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Media workshop begins at Press Club

A two-day media workshop for mid career journalists has begun at Guwahati Press Club today. Organized by the School of Journalism, Southern Illinois University Carbondale (USA) in association with GPC, the workshop is aimed at strengthening media professionalism and the NGO-media interface in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka for HIV/AIDS coverage. The workshop witnesses participation of journalists and the Non-Governmental Organizations workers.

The first session of the workshop was addressed by Dr SI Ahmed, chairman of AIDS Prevention Society, who highlighted the convincing role of media in fighting against the HIV-AIDS menace around the globe.

The programme is led by two American faculty members (James D. Kelly and Jyotika Ramaprasad) with experience in print and television journalism, photojournalism, and social marketing communication campaigns. James Kelly has worked for the Associated Press and for the South Bend (Indiana) Tribune newspaper and is Associate Professor at Indiana University. Similarly Jyotika Ramaprasad has worked on communication campaigns for international agencies including Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, Bangkok, Thailand and is Associate Professor at Southern Illinois University.

Altogether seven journalists have participated in the workshop, informs Nava Thakuria, Secretary of Guwahati Press Club.
