Garlabata Basumatary remembered in Kokrajhar

The influential All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) and Bodo society recalled contributions of Daoharu Garlabata Basumatary, former president of ABSU, who had dedicated his life towards development and uplift of Bodo community, on his 16th death anniversary at Shyamtaibari village in Kokrajhar district on Wednesday.

The anniversary was organized under the aegis of Ramfalbill Anchalik ABSU in association with Garlabata Basumatary Public Charitable Trust (GBPCT) at his burial place with a daylong pragramme. As a part of the programme, Pranay Kumar Brahma, trust chairman hoisted the trust flag in the morning followed by homage to the tomb paid by his widow Raktima Basumatary.

Garlabata was shot at by armed miscreant near Serfanguri petrol pump in 1999 and died on September 7 in 2000 having serious bullet injury. Garlabata Basumatary holds president ship of ABSU in 1992-1995 and involved with mass movement for separate Bodoland state. He was also president of the then Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) party formed in 1996 and holds this post till his death.

Doneswar Goyary, BTC executive member paid floral tribute to late Basumatary attending as chief guest on the occasion. BTC member Jyotirindra Brahma, leaders from ABSU, ABWWF,Tribal sangha,BPF women wing, citizens from irrespective of organizations paid homage to Basumatary.

Goyary said Basumatary was a leader of visionary, who led Bodoland movement along with Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma to seek separate homeland.

Jyotirindra Brahma,BTC MCLA recalling Basumatary’s contribution towards the awakening of Bodo community during the UN Brahma’s led mass movement for separate Bodoland state said he was a high think thank leader of Bodos along other Bodo leaders.

He was a leader of extraordinary of the union as well as Bodo community. Late Basumatary dreamt to form a great master race Bodo nation in the world but his mission and vision could not successful due to untimely demise,Brahma added.

Raktima Basumatary, widow of Basumatary tearfully said she remembered her husband on his anniversary as irrespective of citizens’ throng to paid floral tribute. She said that tomb of her husband be developed and make grand celebration so that coming generation be recalled his ideology and philosophy among society in coming days.

Kokrajhar, May 2:  A search operation that began yesterday evening concluded today with the recovery of three bodies from the Beki River near Manas National Park in Baksa district. KOKRAHAR: A sense of alarm has gripped the Jharbari area after a timber smuggler was discovered dead in a firing incident during the early hours of the morning in Kokrajhar.
