National level Science Conclave in Assam
Assam State Science & Technology Councils two days annual conclave has been inaugurated in Guwahati city on September 6 which has been organised by Assam Science Technology & Environment Council (ASTEC),Guwahati and supported by Department of Science & Technology,Government of India.The inaugural session was held at Hotel Gateway Grandeur where S&T officials from 23 Indian states have participated.In the inaugural ceremony at 11 am todayRavinder Gaur,Scientist D (TDT) and Member Secretary (SSTP),DST,India spoke on State S&T Council's Conclave while Dr.Neeraj Sharma,Advisor & Head (TDT),DST,India explained about significance of state S&T council programmes and activities.Dr.Arup Kumar Misra,Director,ASTEC,Assam in his welcome address thanked all the distinguished scientists from 23 states of India attending the Science Conclave in Guwahati.Speaking on ASTEC and its activities on science popularisation,he said that officials and activists of ASTED had been working closely with the help of 219 Aryabhatta Science Centers established in each development blocks in Assam.BR Samal,Commissioner and Secretary ,Department of Science & Technology, Assam highlighted the challenges posed by Assam with special attention to With Hunting as a major social menace.Keshab Mahanta,Minister,Science & Technology,Assam formally inaugurated the Science Conclave and released the “Compendium on State Specific S&T Interventions by States and S&T Councils”.On the occasion he also said that a Science City would be constructed in Assam shortly with an initial amount of rupees 110 core.He specially mentioned the role to be played by scientists in remote areas of Assam giving importance to increase in pioneering activities on research on river beds,Muga silk and to prepare a state wide data base of Bio-diversity.He declared that ASTEC would arrange state or NE level science exhibition or Science mela every year.Dr.RK Barman,HOD,S&T,ASTEC offered vote of thanks at the end of inaugural ceremony.Along with the two days Science Conclave ASTEC is also organising an exhibition -”Ideas to Action:Let us Grow with Innovation” at Regional Science Centre,Khanapara during September 7 and 8.The exhibition will display the various technologies propagate the programmes carried out by the council for the benefit of the participants coming from different states of India.

A minor girl dead and dozen others fell ill after they consumed prasad served at a religious function in Udalguri district on Friday. The tragic incident took place in Kalaigaon area where a ten year old girl died early in the morning. At least 71 others have complained of stomach ace and vomitting hours after they consumed prasad. The deceased was identified as Dipsikha Nath who died at the Mangaldai Civil Hospital. Talking to media, ADC DN Hazariaka said that the incident took place hours after they consumed prasad at the house of Harakanta Nath on Wednesday.
