Sankaradeva cultural inaugurated

A Cultural Heritage Centre of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva was inaugurated at Dhing on September 3, 2016 in a solemn function. It is situated at R. K. B. Road, Athgaon, Dhing. Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti, President of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva inaugurated the centre by lighting ceremonial light. He also presided over the meeting.

A German scholar, Thibault Weigelt attended the inauguration and spoke a few words. He said he was highly impressed by the culture of Assam. Dr Biman Hazarika, a researcher of Sankari art eulogised the role played by Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva in preservation of the legacy left by Srimanta Sankaradeva. Entrepreneur Joon Rajkhowa said that the centre would go a long way in popularising the Sankari art and craft. Prominent local citizens like Nityananda Bora, Khagen Bora etc spoke in the meeting. Members of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva, Indranil Gayan and Gautam Saikia gave an account of past activities of the organisation.

Activities like Aharya Production, Manuscript Conservation etc will be carried out in this Cultural Heritage Centre. Henceforth people will be able to buy Aharya items of Bhaona at the centre. Sattras will be able to get their manuscripts cleaned scientifically here for conservation. It may be mentioned that Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva was the first in India to organise a comprehensive training workshop on Aharya, sponsored by Sangeet Natak Akademi. Aharya items produced by Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva are now accepted by all performers.

Mridu Moucham Bora, Secretary of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva as well as a manuscript expert explained the purpose of the meeting. He said that the centre would work for disseminating the cultural heritage of Srimanta Sankaradeva. Papu Das, a member of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva described how the Aharya products of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva were well received in the Make in India exhibition held in Mumbai; the team of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva was the only group from North East to participate there.
