Mahanta vs Patowary

Till the other days they were AGP leaders which came to power since they signed the historic Assam Accord in Delhi. We are talking of Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and his one time cabinet colleague Chandra Mohan Patowary. Mahanta is still the regional party holding the same view on the Bangladeshi immigrant issue. Still he wants the immigrants irrespective of their religious beliefs be detected and deported from the soil of Assam. This is very simple.

But his one time acolyte and cabinet collages has turned a political bete noire on the floor of the Assam Assembly which resumed its budget session on Monday. Both they targeted each others with facts and figures. The verbal duel started as soon as Mahanta wanted to know Dispur’s position on the move to accord refugee status to the Hindu Bangladeshis. Mahanta said that the move will leave an extra burden on Assam where lakhs of Hindu Bangladeshi nationals will try to settle in the state.

Mahanta said,”"there are 1.72 crore Hindus in Bangladesh and will India ask Bangladesh to give security to them? Will the state government tell the Centre to implement the Assam Accord, because only this will solve the problem?”

Then Patowary said it would depend on the neighbouring country to ensure their protection. He said, “"the (bill to amend) Citizenship Act has been brought in Parliament, but it is not passed yet. So there is no point talking about it.”

Patowary further said the notification was for pan-India and there is no question of burdening Assam with minority immigrants. Mahanta countered by saying,” “all come illegally. What will happen to them and what is your step? According to us, Assam Accord is the only solution and so will the state government ask the Centre for its speedy implementation?"

Patowary who got angry with Mahanta and started criticising his former president for posing the same questions. “He is not trying to understand," said Patowary.

Mahanta said, "I know all these that is why, I have asked it against and again. The immigration problem is very serious and will Assam government tell the Centre about this? So stop making such statements."

Gogoi talks Naga pact with Rahul

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi is holding a crucial meeting with Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi along with his counterparts in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.The Naga peace pact is believed to be the agenda of discussion where the party vice president have asked them to go all out against the Centre for striking the deal without consultation with them.Gogoi along with Nabam Tuki and Okram Ibobi Singh arrived in the capital at 12 noon to attend the meeting.   (With inputs from New Delhi)

ST status: Talks in progress

A group of six ethnic communities are hunkering down with the Centre on Thursday in New Delhi to arrive at a conclusion on the ST status.Accompanied by Union sports minister Sarbanadan Sonowal,  tribal affairs minister Jural Ornam talked to the ethnic leaders at 11 in the morning which ended at 1 in the afternoon.The ethnic leaders remained firm on their demands while the Union ministers assured them of steps to ensure ST status for six communities. The meeting assumes significance amid an escalating demand from the existing ST people to stop the move.The ethnic leader are scheduled to meet Union home minister Rajnath Singh in the evening.

Gogoi’s vote polarizing attempt!

BJP names key suspect

Minutes after Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma took on a section of media for naming him in the watergate, BJP leaders in New Delhi called him one of the key suspects in the scam.BJP parliamentary board members in New Delhi released a booklet on the corruption cases in the Congress ruled states naming Dr Sarma as one of the key suspect in the multi crore scam. BJP leaders said, “without the involvement of the then GMDA minister the huge scam could not have taken place. BJP unhappy over poll prospect

BJP's central leadership is not happy with the party’s poll prospects in Assam. This was the message virtually Amit Shah conveyed when the party president held a crucial meeting in Guwahati on Tuesday.Convened at the Hotel Rhituraj immediately after his arrival, Shah talked to Siddharth Bhattacharya, Sarbananda, Bijoya Chakrabartty  Rajen Gohain and Ramen Deka who apprised him of the state’s pre poll scenario.As many as ten central leaders attended the meeting which took place for at least one hour. The meeting is believed to have discussed Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma-led dissidence in Congress amid speculation that he would either float a regional party or join BJP.

Gogoi, Dutta meet Rahul Gandhi

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi and state party president Anjan Dutta met Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Tuesday amid speculations that Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma along with his close associates might quit the party.Gogoi and Dutta along with Dr P Joshi arrived at the residence of the Congress vice president and discussed the escalating dissidence at the instance by Dr Sarma, Hirany Bora who recently quit the ruling party.The duo are believed to have submitted a list of a few candidates who are applying for tickets to contest the assembly polls early next year.Gogoi and Dutta arrived in New Delhi and attended Sonia Gandhi’s iftar party at 10th Janpath on Monday evening. 

BJP taps Upasa for Jalukbari

BJP is believed to have agreed to field Upasa Phukan from Jalukbari constituency to counter Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in the assembly polls early next year.Accompanied by her mother, the daughter of former home minister Late Bhrigu Kumar Phukan has been visiting a cross section of the people in the constutuency saying that she translate her father’s dream into reality.  According to sources, she agreed to contest the polls at the instance of Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal who visited her several times to convince her.
