In yet another landmark development in the Manipur’s poll political landscape, Irom Sharmila on Tuesday announced to end her fast to fight the upcoming assembly polls.
Talking to reporters at the Imphal Court premises, she said that she is waiting for August 9 to break her 15 year long fast.
She observed that during her 15 year long she got no response from the people in power and that there is hardly any hope a positive response in near future.
She said that she has no option but to politically fight the draconian Act that empowers the armed forces to unleash reign of terror on the common people.
The decision is bound to have a huge impact on the state’s political scenario in the north eastern state hardly a year ahead of the assembly polls.
She started the fast unto death in November 2000 in protest against the Malom incident near Imphal airport.
Since then she has been declining food and drink demanding the real of the Act. During this period she has been arrested and rearrested. A couple of years back, the government has been nose-feeding her and spnt over Rs 80,000 for her security, medication and nose feeding.

It is vital that she gets proper medical guidance on how to gradually come back to a normal diet, from experts who know the art and science of fasting. Breaking a 16 years fast may take at least 16 weeks or else it can be fatal. AYUSH or JNI Bangalore or similar organisations should be consulted.
A protest meeting organised by Journalists’ Protection Committee Assam at Guwahati Press Club today urged the authority to nab the culprits involved in the assassination of Raihanul Naium, a reporter of Gana Chabuk, in Dhubri on September 8 evening. The meeting also resolved to organise a State wide protest demonstration on September 16 next. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi leaves for New Delhi on Wednesday on a three days visit to the national capital.According to sources, apart from his schedule to call on Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Gogoi is scheduled to meet prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shindhe to apprise them of the prevailing law and order situation in BTAD areas and Dhubri. But the ULFA member who made the grenade attack was captured hours after the incident. He has confessed the nefarious deed saying that the target was the security forces. Delhi police have arrested a youth accusing him along with three of his associates of gang raping a girl from Assam. The 16-year-old girl was allegedly confined at a house in Khyala in west Delhi for seven days where they raped her repeatedly. The rapists released her when the victim’s health deteriorated. Later she approached police and filed an FIR. She reached Raghubir Nagar on Imran’s direction to spend the night at his friend Nawal Kishore’s house. A case of rape was filed with Khyala police station after a medical test of the victim, and Nawal and his wife Shabeena were arrested.

Yet another rape incident of Assamese sends shockwave in Delhi. But the rapist has been booked. The incident took place on Saturday where a 19-year old woman from Assam working as a house-maid in Miyanwali Nagar in West Delhi was raped. That too by a 55 year old man who was arrested immediately after the victim lodged the complaint. The shoot-at-sight orders in the curfew-bound Dhubri town seems to have worked where there no fresh incidents of violence in the area during the last 12 hours. Security forces claimed to have killed a hardcore ULFA man during an encounter in Goalpara district on Monday. The encounter took place at Krishnai bordering Meghalaya in the wee hours when police launched an operation against the ULFA men who have been hiding in the area. Identified as Ruhit Rabha, the ULFA militant died on the spot while four others managed to flee from the spot. Later, police recovered some arms and ammunition from the spot. Operation is on to trace the four other militants.
