The mortal remains of Anjan Dutta were consigned to flames on Friday a day after the APCC president died of cardiac arrest in New Delhi. After last respect to the lifeless former minister in Guwahati and Sivasagar, Dutta’s body was taken to Gaurisagar where he was cremated with full state honour in the afternoon. Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma, MP Ripun Bora were prominent among those who were present at the cremation ground. Before that thousands of bereaved Congress men received Dutta’s body at the Jorhat Airport in the morning and was taken to Sivasagar to facilitate his fans to pay their last respect in Sivasagar town and his birth place Gayan gaon.
Dutta died of cardiac ailment on Thursday morning at the All India Institute of Medical Science a couple of weeks after he was rushed to it. The party in rank and file have condoled his death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
A gang of miscreants raped a girl before mercilessly killing her in Karbi Anglong sending huge shockwaves and anger across the state on Friday. The bizarre but brutal incident took place in Baithalangsu in the hills district on Thursday night and the lifeless girl was spotted near the road on Friday morning. Three Cotton College students have been remaining traceless for the last 24 hours striking no less sensation in the premier seat of learning in the north eastern region. Identified as Wahidur Rahman, Tonmoy Kathar and Partha Mali, the higher secondary students suddenly vanished from the college campus on Thursday. Their mobile numbers phones are either not reachable or remaining switched off forcing their parents to file a complaint before the police. Investigations are going to ascertain their whereabouts. The stage is set for holding the Karbi Anglong Autonomous council polls on June 12. The state poll panel has already announced the poll schedule for 26 seats in the 30 member autonomous body. Armed robbers in the heart of Guwahati city whisked away diamond, gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 21 crore at gun point on Tuesday evening. According to the eyewitnesses, a gang of robbers armed with sophisticated weapons' started blankfiring as soon as they arrived in the MP Jwellery premises in the GS Road at 7 in the evening. As the robbers outside the shop started blank firing to terrorize the people, three others forcibly went inside and took away all diamond, gold and silver ornaments within five minutes. Four persons died when a truck full of logs carrying them slipped into a ditch in Kamrup district bordering Meghalaya on Tuesday. The shocking accident took place at Hahim in Boko where the logs fell on the four persons as soon as the truck met with the mishap. All of them died on the spot. According to the local residents, the truck which was full of smuggled logs fell into the drain after the driver lost control over it. Local residents and police rushed to the spot and took Sn hour to extricate the bodies. Police have registered a case to investigate it.
