On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5,Kaziranga Wildlife Society, Wildlife Welfare Trust and Northeast Area Development Forum for Regional Development jointly organized a day long interactive and poster campaign session at Burapahar in association with Assam police and Forest Department.The celebration had started at Amguri Bagan near Jakhalabandha at 11 am.Mubina Akhtar,secretary Kaziranga Wildlife Society and CR Bhobora,former conservator of Forest had attractive interaction session with children and villagers.Colour posters of rhino and wild elephants with important messages were distributed among villagers and forest personnels.Eight villagers were felicitated with gamocha and a tree sapling each for their contribution in the field of nconservation and anti poaching activities. Environmental journalist Jayanta Das and office bearers of Kaziranga WLS felicitated all the eight personnels.The programme was attended by Padum Borthakur, President,Prasanta Gogoi, Working President,Kaziranga WLS;Puspadhar Buragohain, Range Officer,Burapahar Range Office;Deben Bora,Officer-in-Charge, Jakhalabandha Police Station etc.

 Anotherinteractive session was held at Burapahar Forest Range Office with forest personnel working in interior camps at 2 am.Mubina Akhtar,Secretary,Kaziranga WLS and Hony.Member of Assam Wildlife Board welcomed all the forest personnel working against odd condition as Burapahar had been the most vulnerable to poaching of all the range offices under Kaziranga NP because of its geographical nature.Kaziranga WLS formally felicitated Deben Bora,O/C, Jakhalabandha Police Station;Puspadhar Buragohain,Forest Range Officer,Burapahar Range and CR Bhobora,former Conservator of Forest,but still working against poaching of rhino and elephants in Kaziranga and Manas NP.Upen Tamuli (Forestor),wildlife activist Gautam Saikia,Bhumidhar Deuri (SI,Police);Deben Bora,Officer in Charge,Jakhalabandha shared their real life experiences with society members.All of them suggested a few steps for to boost anti poaching activities like-wall or fenching by NH 37 so that animals cannot flee to Karbi Hills where they get killed;supply of sophisticated weapons,better solar lights and cells in interior camps,good conditioned fast boats, employment of more forest staff,good clothing,rain coats,leave with salary once in a year etc. The programme was also attended by Babul Gogoi (Managing Editor,Assam Times);Raj Baruah,Chandan Gogoi,Utpal Panchanan,Apurba Kumar Das,Ranjit Dahotiya all executive members of Kaziranga Wildlife Society.

 The carcass of a twelve years old wild elephant (Makhna)found this morning on the bed of Samrang river near India-Bhutan international border.It has caused concern among nature loving people of the district.Eye witnesses said the elephant could have been poisoned somewhere else the previous night.Frequent deaths of wild elephants have now been a serious concern in the district.Udalguri District Journalists Union and Green Society,Udalguri expressed concern at the incident and request forest department to take appropriate action.

One Lawa Majhi (45) was killed by a loner wild elephant at Bormukali near Nonai forest range office in Udalguri district last night at 8 pm.The person was coming home from market while came on the way of two loners.So far 84 people have been killed by wild elephants during last five years in the district against the deaths of 34 wild elephants.
