Cross border terrorism, infiltration and Indo-Bangla border fencing will be dominating in the discussion between Indian foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon and his Bangladesh counterpart Mohd Touhid Hussain, in New Delhi on Wednesday.
According to information, New Delhi is all set to press Dhaka to act against such elements in view of the revelation of Bangladeshi link being found to several terror incidents in India. Menon is expected to take up the issue of Bangladesh being used by terrorists as a base or route to reach here and carry out anti-India activities.
A number of terror attacks that have taken place in India have had linkages in Bangladesh, causing concern here. Infiltration by militants via the Bangladesh border is easier as it is a porous frontier. Work is on to fence the border but there are some places where fencing cannot take place at a distance of 150 yards from the boundary as laid down by the international norms due to hill tracts and water bodies. In this aspect, India is seeking cooperation from Bangladesh to allow it to set up the fence.

Infiltration from Bangladesh cannot be stopped until and unless corrupt BSF personnel guarding the border are brought to the right track. This force is helping arms smuggling, cow smuggling as well as infiltration by taking bribe from the infiltrators. So far border fencing is concern, some land has to be acquired from its rightful owners and before acquiring it by the district administrations the govt. has to notify it in its official gazette. Proposals submitted by the district administration for publication of notification are lying pending at government press since long. So how can one hope that the fencing will be completed within a stipulated time? It is a serious matter to be inquired in to.

At least seven persons, including a 13 years old boy were hospitalized due to possible food poisoning at Patgaon bazaar in Kokrajhar district on Saturday. The incident took place at a market when the victims complained of headache, vomiting, body ache after eating puris at a tea stall in Patgaon bazaar. They were brought to Kokrajhar Rupnath Brahma Civil hospital.
Security forces on Saturday intercepted a Bangladeshi national in Guwahati for illegal stay since 1993. He is identified as Subrata Dasgupta who was arrested from a rented house in Islampur area in the wee hours without any valid documents. According to police, preliminary investigation showed that the accused hails from Manikgaon area in Bangladesh's Dhaka district.
The accused was living in Assam for more than 10 years and married an Indian woman from Kolkata five months back, he said.
There is no let-up in the overall flood situation on Saturday. The overall scene deteriorated following torrential rains for the past couple of days inundating low lying human habitations and cropland. Among the districts affected are Barpeta, Darrang and Dhubri. In Bajali subdivision of Barpeta, surging waters of the Kaladiya river breached dykes and embankments at many places flooding villages and fields.

Hundreds of passengers had a narrow escape when the driver of the Dibrugarh-bound Kamrup Express found a goods train stationed on the same track and applied emergency brakes in time in Morigaon district on Friday.According to information, the driver found a foodgrain-loaded goods train near the Barahu railway station ahead on the track and applied emergency brakes. The express was delayed for more than two hours as a result and later left for Dibrugarh.
In yet another shocking incident of man elephant conflict, a wild tusker trampled to death a beat officer in Nagaon district on Friday. At least 30 passengers are missing after a country boat capsized in a river in Bongaigaon district on Friday. According to police, the country boat capsized in the river Champawati when it was on sailing from Chapar in Dhubri district to Oudubi with 40 people and cattle on board. Train services on the Silchar-Lumding line resumed on Friday after a fortnight as heavy landslides had damaged rail tracks.
