AAJU demands 1000 crore package for KNP
The All Assam Journalist Union in its executive meeting held at Kaziranga Convention Centre expresses its worries over the increased activities of poachers in the Kaziranga National Park. Apart from poaching, the massive erosion caused by Brahmaputra and the encroachments made by suspected Bangladeshi immigrants are worth mentioning. Therefore the AAJU in its Executive Meeting held on 13th July demands a Rs. 1000 crore package from the Govt. of India in order to equip the forest guards with state of the art arms and ammunition to combat poachers and also to improve the infrastructure of the park. It was also decided in the meeting to send a delegation to New Delhi in this regard. In another decision AAJU condemns the boycott of journalists by Dibrugarh Medical College and decided to wear black badge on 15th July in protest.

A children drama workshop was organized by Sisur Umola Chora at Golaghat town from July 6 to 26, 2008. The workshop was attended by noted drama personality of Assam, Sri Gunakar Deva Goswami. Anurag Rajkumar, a H.S. Second year student of D.R. College, Golaghat, was found dead under suspicious condition at a hotel room at Dimapur in Nagaland. According to the sources, Anurag who studied in D.R. College by staying in his relative’s house at Golaghat was missing from 22nd July. On the next day Anurag’s family filed a missing person report in Golaghat Police Station. On the night of 23rd July, Anurag’s family came to know from an unknown source that Anurag has been found dead in a hotel at Dimapur. The matter is still under investigation.
A poacher was killed by the police at Kanchanjuri near Kaziranga National Park in the night of 23rd July. According to sources during the course of regular checking of vehicles by Bagori Police Station, a Tata Sumo bearing registration No. AS-06/E-5082 did not pay any heed to police signal to stop and speeded away. The poachers deserted the vehicle at Kanchanjuri and tried to escape towards Kaziranga National Park and started firing at the police team who were following them. In retaliation police also fired at them killing one of the poachers named Piku Ali and injuring one Bashar Ali. The police arrested five persons from the spot. Police also recovered a pipe gun from the poachers.
Flood situation in Kaziranga National Park, the only World heritage Site in Assam, is again taking a disastrous form. With the rise of water level in the river Brahmaputra, new areas have come under the threat of flood. Nearly 70% area under Burapahar range of KNP is being water logged. Borpathar police in association with Merapani police on 18th July arrested a person named Intazul Hussain who is believed to be engaged in illegal arms trading. Its important to mention here that On 16th July police arrested one Safir Ahmed, another illegal arms dealer, from whom police recovered a 9 mm Pistol and three live cartridges. On the basis of information given by Safir Ahmed, Borpathar police arrested Intazul from Merpani area of Golaghat Dist. According to the sources these people procured illegal arms from an NSCN (IM) leader named Monthang Lutha and supplied the arms to various anti social elements operating in the region.

The incidents of rhino killings in Kaziranga National Park, which have shaken the nation, has now been investigated by the country’s supreme investigative agency CBI. It is important to mention here that last year twenty rhinos have been killed by the poachers and in this year also the poachers have already killed seven rhinos.
