Journalist and democracy expert Bidhayak Das, who is presently based in Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, emphasized on better tie with the neighboring country. Delivering a talk on the changing political scenario of Myanmar at Guwahati Press Club today, the media personality from Assam also expressed hope that the Union government in New Delhi would play a pro-active role in framing policies to deal with Indo-Burma issues.

Das observed that Myanmar has been adopting a kind of democracy which would be beneficial for the people of northeast India to get involved with bilateral trade with the southeast Asian country. He opined that the last general elections held in November 2015 had politically empowered National League for Democracy chief Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Myanmar was ruled by military generals for decades and Suu Kyi was also put under house arrest. But slowly the country has opened up for the world. Das commented that Nobel laureate Suu Kyi is respected by almost all communities of Myanmar and she can definitely help the country to reform for a perfect democracy in near future.
