The peace process in Assam is set to take a significant role as ULFA general secretary Anup Chetia is expected to play a vital role along with those in the ceasefire. According to the expelled top ULFA cadre Mrinal Hazarika, who captained ULFA’s crack unit they are more committed to the people and hoped that once Anup is released by Bangladesh they will urge him to take the lead.
Addressing a huge rally in Sadiya, Mrinal said despite ULFA diktat they will carry forward it and it would require two stages. Firstly, Firstly, on Friday they would exchange their views with various parties, organisations and individuals in Tinsukia district. Secondly, they will be organising a public rally at the Rangghar premises in Sivasagar.
Mrinal’s close associate Jiten Dutta, who was also expelled by the central leadership said they will stay at the designated camp until and unless the peace process bears fruit. According to him, they want two designated camps to be set up one at Lakhipathat and the another at Sadiya adding that they will keep their arms inside the these camps. He added that they have received assurance of support from several parties, organisations and individuals. Jiten maintained that despite expulsion they will try their best to avoid any confrontation with the central leadership only for the greater interest of the peace loving people.
Notably, Bangladesh has agreed to deport Chetia to his home country. According to information, he is all set to be extradited at the foreign secretary level bilateral meeting slated for July 12 in New Delhi. It is quite significant to note that ULFA sees it a government conspiracy in the unilateral ceasefire which is followed by a bid to involve Chetia in the peace process.
