The 45th National Safety Week, observed at Nagaon Paper Mill (NPM), Kagajnagar on 4-11 March witnessed a series of activities including administering of safety pledges, wearing of safety badges by the employees, safety essay writing competitions, display of safety banner & posters with discussions over various industrial safety related issues.
The celebration kicked off with the hoisting of safety-day flag by Paban Kumar Bhuyan, chief executive/consultant (technical) of the NPM, a unit of Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited on 4 March 2016. It was followed by the pledge taking ceremony administered in Hindi, Assamese and English by Ashok Kr Roy, acting general manager (works) in presence of employees representatives Ananda Bordoloi and Atul Mahanta.
The winners of various competitions were honoured by the high level NPM officials including GK Choudhury, inspector of factories, Nagaon. Karan Konwar, a contract worker for Das electrical working under the electrical department was appreciated for his recent brave works to protect human life in a critical situation.
The concluding meeting was addressed Rajesh Kr Jha, Dhiren Borah, Lalit Raj, Nilakshi Konwar, JN Gogoi with others where NPM safety manager Dwijen Thakuria welcomed the guests and explained the importance of the safety related observations in the industrial avenues.

Three villagers died and twenty others have been injured when security forces sprang upon a group of people who prevented the PowerGrid authority from erecting a wall in Biswanath chariali on Tuesday. The incident took place at Baghmari at 5.30 in the morning when local people came out to the street opposing the wall erected secretly on Monday. Security forces opened fire at the protesters where one died on the spot and two others died on the way to the hospital. Angry mob later burnt down 4 police vehicles. Top ranked police and civil officials have arrived in the spot to contain the situation.
An unclaimed explosion has again proved the futility of the heavy presence of security forces. That too just near the Chandmari police station. The explosion took place on Monday evening with a huge sound. There was no report of any casualty. Police claimed to have found some local explosive in the bomb. No one has so far been arrested. Police havenot denied ULFA's hand in it to make presence felt. Investigation is on.
A CBI team is set to land in Guwahati on Tuesday to take up the allegations against a few chit fund companies. The team would properly screen the cases in consultation with the CID officials and only a few critical cases would be taken up for investigation. CBI agreed to probe a few cases against Saradha group, Rose Valley, Jeevan Surakshya who have looted crores of rupees by chit fund.
Curfew has been imposed in Malaipathar in Goalpara district amid tension after two persons were killed this morning when the police opened fire to control a 3000-strong mob on the rampage.Seven protesters have been injured in the firing. Eight cops are also hurt. Police had to open fire to control a crowd that went berserk after the body of a 50-year-old cowherd, who was missing since Sunday, was found this morning in the Mailapathar area.
Assam Police have published a list of 11 similar companies that have been collecting money by illegal means and warned people against investing money with them. Health and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma buys band name again after Saradha Chief claimed to have paid him Rs 3 crore.In a letter to CBI on April 6, Sen said, “another high level person who has dramatically cheated me is Himanta Biswa Sarma. In one and half years, we have given him not less than Rs 3 crore, in cash and some vouchers have been signed by his office executives by some other means."Sen further claimed to have paid Matang Sinh for NETV, Manoranjana Gupta for Frontier TV, DY 365 besides Amguri MLA Anjan Dutta crores to rupees.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is seriously contemplating handing over some cases against chit fund companies to CBI.These include the Saradha Group, whose chairman Sudipto Sen was arrested on Tuesday. The move comes after Sen wrote to CBI naming several politicians including a cabinet minister and owners of some private television news channels.
