Tribal organisation oppose ST status to six communities

The United Tribal Organisation,Assam has warned to move to Supreme Court if the BJP led NDA government grants Scheduled Tribe(ST) status to the six ethnic communities of Assam.

 Speaking the reporters today at Kokrajhar Press Club,Markush Basumatary ,president of the organisation,a common platform of Scheduled Tribes Plains and Hills, strongly dead oppossed the move from centre government to accord ST status to the six ethnic communities in Assam.He said that the BJP led NDA have been trying to accord ST status to the communities like Moran,Matak,Chutia,Adivasi,Koch Rajbongsi and Tai Ahom in Assam to gain political image in the state.He has slammed the centre for trying to cease tribal status who are enjoying existing ST status in the state by assuring to give ST status.He expressed serious concern over the centre’s move to accord ST status to the other ethnic community in the state.

He has urged the government to take bold initiative to give higher status for the existing tribal communities before allotting new ST status to six ethnic communities, other wise it will hamper existing ST communities among society. He has warned to move to Supreme Court to seek legal step against the move of centre if the government try to accord ST status to six ethnic communities of Assam.
