It will address the need to include community concerns and priorities as well as robust research in informing and redesigning policies. This assumes priority given the devastation caused by recent earthquakes in Nepal and Manipur and the vulnerability of the entire NER as well as the Himalayan region to seismic activity.
In addition, the need for vernacular architecture (traditional housing) will also be emphasised including the Mishing style houses along the Brahmaputra, the Assam-type house as well as the importance of allying traditional styles to modern technology to make buildings, villages and cities safe during disasters. Innovations from the Sunderbans, the North-east and other places will be presented along with official framework for improved safety and outreach.
The conference is being conducted in collaboration with the National Institute for Disaster Management in New Delhi, the North Eastern Council and the National Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Policy (Ahmedabad).
Speakers and participants include Kiren Rijiju, MoS for Home, Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla of Mizoram, Prof Shiv Vishwanathan, Dr. Shekhar Pathak of PAHAR, PD Rai, Sikkim MP as well as members of the state disaster management teams from different states, officials, specialists, researchers and activists from NE states, Uttarkhand, other parts of Indiaas well as Nepal.

The Delhi government has agreed to set up a statute of Chaolung Sukapha in the national capital. The assurance came from Delhi Chief minister Sheila Dixit who talked to her Assam counterpart Tarun Gogoi. Before that Gogoi in a letter requested Dixit to consider the proposal to set up the first Ahom king in the national capital. A series of low intensity blasts has forced the security forces to fan in lower Assam on Sunday. Suspected ULFA militants on Saturday night set off eight IED blasts in a space of 90 minutes targeting the house of an AIDUF MLA and crowded markets in Goalpara and Dhubri districts. There, is, however, no report of casualty.ULFA, along with some other insurgents group, gave a call for boycotting the Republic Day celebrations. Over 20 people have been injured when a passenger bus slipped into deep gorge in near Guwahati on Saturday.The accident took place at around 2-30 in the afternoon when the passenger bus was on its way to Kamakhya and suddenly it lost control and fell on a gorge where several people were rescued by police and local residents.
