Wildlife research training kicks off at USTM
Wildlife research, a subject which was fairly unknown even a few years ago, is now fast becoming one of great interest for the younger generations who seek alternative careers as wildlife researchers and conservationists.
In view of the growing demand for training on the subject, the Department of Zoology, University of Science and Technology (USTM) in collaboration with Aaranyak, is organizing a three-day certificate course on Wildlife Research Techniques from January 5-January 7, 2016.
USTM and Aaranyak in 2015 signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote research and conservation by building the capacities of young students and reserachers and engaging them in applied research in the field of biodiversity conservation. Speaking during the inaugural session Professor P. C. Bhattacharjee retired Head of the Department of Zoology, Gauhati University, appreciated the efforts of Aaranyak and USTM in introducing a certificate course for the benefit of students and researchers. USTM Chairman, M. Haque informed that over 100 applicants applied for the training against 30 seats available at the national level.
Aaranyak Secretary General and CEO, Bibhab Talukdar emphasized that the rich biodiversity of the region demands young students and researchers to conduct researches and conservation work. He said Aaranyak and USTM shall jointly conduct such training from time to time.
The training will provide intensive training on wildlife research techniques including tiger, co-predator and prey monitoring, birds identification, arboreal species identification and survey techniques, field survey of herpetofauna and aquatic fauna, handling of GPS, camera trapping, preparation of educational materials for conservation and wildlife photography techniques.
The training which is residential has been organized inside the USTM campus at 9 Mile, bordering Meghalaya and Guwahati. In view of the huge response and rush of the participants, the organizers plan to conduct a second batch of training shortly.
