Child protection programme initiated in Kokrajhar

It is a shock and resented breeze among citizens of Assam that every year, at least 50 persons including children have been trafficked from various districts of Lower Assam, which has been becoming a sensitive issue for the society as children are also not spared from trafficking in today’s hi-tech era in the state of Assam.

 

 

 

A total of 796 children have been repatriated in last 12 years in Assam, who has been trafficked from Lower Assam various districts, after being exploited at various cities in India, besides 60 children are rescued in Kolkata West Bengal and accommodated 20 children at Nedan Foundation in Kokrajhar so far.

 A week long ‘Mukhyamantrir Sunali Saisheb Prakalpa Surakshit Sishu, Surakshit Axom’ (Chief Ministers’ Golden Child Protection Project, Protection Assam), a state convergent plan of Action on child welfare in Assam, an awareness programme, was inaugurated by Madhav Prasad Sarma, Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner on Tuesday in Kokrajhar  in the huge presence of children from various institutions, teachers, supervisors, ASHA workers, members from various NGOs.

The programme was organised by Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Kokrajhar under ICPS and Nedan Foundation for Assam to make awareness about protection of children from trafficking, child labour, early marriage, substance abuse and alcoholism, witch-hunting, violence against children and role of community among society.

 Madhav Prasad Sarma said that the programme has been organized to create awareness about common public and children on child trafficking, child marriage among society in the state which was launched by state government. It will be helping hand among society while getting information on children protection”.

Digambar Narzary, chairman of Nedan Foundation said, “It is one of the positive ways that state government is responding to the cases of child trafficking in the state. There are many cases of children touching trafficking from Lower Assam districts that Assam is the second position in the case of child trafficking issue. Lower Assam has been devastated with various kinds of conflict and floods that are from most venerable children, most of the children need to be repatriated, who belonged to be from Lower Assam region. At present there are 60 children, who are rescued Kolkata in West Bengal’.

‘There are 796 children repatriated in last 12 years in Assam, who have been trafficked from this region, after being exploited at various cities in India. We have accommodated 20 children in Kokrajhar and we need to have a stay home to give them for living among society”, Digambar added.
