'Once there was a village' - Erosion hit Morigaon
The erosion is still taking a serious turn at Bhuragaon and Mayong revenue circle in Morigaon district. Brahmaputra's erosion causing extensive damages to crop fields and human habitations in that region in the last fortnight. One revenue village namely Pabhokati was completely submerged in Brahmaputra while three others namely Dighali, Molohu, and Baralimari were partially eroded. More than 120 families have been rendered homeless while 500 hectares of sugarcane and jute plantations were devastated. One child was drowned at Gorubandha village under Mayong revenue circle on Tuesday.
The Minister for Revenue and Higher Education Dr Bhumidhar Barman, along with Dr Nazul Islam, Food and Civil Supplies Minister visited the erosion hit villages along the bank of the Brahmaputra on June 24. But according to the affected people as told this correospondent that their visit was just a formality and they believe it would never bring any hope for them, but will open a door to snatch money for the Govt. officials.
The Revenue Minister met the DC of Morigaon as well as top officials of Agriculture, Water Resources and Public Works Department and discussed the rehabilitation measures for the affected people.The Minister said to the media later that a scheme of Rs.14 crore has been submitted to the Central Government for rehabilitation of flood and erosion victims of Assam.

Acting on a tip-off, Hojai and Lanka police, assisted by CRPF jawans led by H Neog, Circle inspector Doboka, gunned down six members of a 14 members group of dacoits on July 2 at night around 12.30 am at village Pamgaon under Lanka Police Station. According to information the dacoits were in army camouflage dress and were forwarding towards Pamgaon irrigation canal Chariali through an irrigation drain at the time of ambush by police personnel. Caused by the mighty river Brahmaputra, erosion takes a serious turn at Bhuragaon revenue circle in Morigaon district during the last few weeks causing extensive damages to crop fields and human habitation. As many as 30 families have shifted themselves to safer places from the effected areas. More than 200 hectres of land bearing sugarcane and jute submerged into the Brahmaputra in last week. It may be mentioned that during the last few years as many as 55 revenue villages were completely submerged into the said river due to erosion and more than sixty thousand people were rendered homeless. Talasing Hasampur (65), a resident of village Komrakata, in Nagaon was killed by an elephant at around 9.30 on Friday night. According to forest officials, a heard of about 100 elephants entered the said village in search of food. On seeing the jumbos people raised a hue and cry to drive them away. Hasampur reportedly came of his house with a lamp in his hand and did not notice the elephant. The elephant immediately caught the man with its trunk and killed him on the spot. Later, forest officials and police personnel rushed to spot on receiving the information and brought the body to Hojai.

A team of Assam Rifles 43 co. nabbed an ULFA linkman identified as Ratan Pator hails from Bamunimaidam, Guwahati, on March 26 night on part of their routine check at Woloowoni Chariali under Kaliabor Police station. Along with Pator, one Binoy kumer Singh, a member of K C P, a terroist organization of Manipur, is also nabbed. The both men were travelling from Guwahati to Tezpur in a night bus. Members of the Kampur unit AASU and Asom Shena seized two quintal of ganja on October 16 morning from a train bound for Guwahati from Dimapur. The members of the said organizations revealed that one of their companions while travelling on the train came to know about this consignment and without delay he informed the unit as well as the Kampur police. 3 NHAI officials Umesh Suresh Sharma, project manager, Jogaprasad Deka, Deputy Project Manager, Dhrubajyoti Choudhury, Engineer, including the driver and the PSO have been kidnapped by unidentified miscreants from Manderdisa-Hathikhali under Langting police station, Nagaon district on March 12 late night. Police told this correspondent over telephone that the militant outfit, Black Widow has denied its involvement in the aforsaid abduction and no ransom has yet been demanded by any group.
