Nagaon district food security act launched at Raha

Panchayat and Rural development minster of the state Rakibul Hussain launched the Food Security Act (FSA) in Nagaon district on Saturday. Accordingly, every person belonging to priority households will be entitled to receive 5 kg of food grains per person per month at subsidised prices not exceeding Rs. 3.00 per kg for rice. 

National Food Security Act (NFSA) is an Act to provide food and nutritional security in human life cycle approach by ensuring access to adequate quantity of quality food at affordable prices for people to live with dignity. Under NFSA, 2013, a total of 2 crores 11 lakh 69 thousands has been identified as priority households in the State of Assam and 22 lakhs 65 thousands 136 household in Nagaon district will be benefitted by the scheme .

At the launch of the scheme, held at Raha Block Development office premises , the minister and other dignitaries handed over the rice to 11 beneficiaries.

Speaking at the launch, Rakibul Hussain called for better work culture within the district to ensure better implementation of projects. “If government employees work in the right spirit, then the implementation of the programme will be in right earnest and benefit the people,” said the minister while launching the districtwide National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA) and National Food Security Mission at Raha organised by Nagaon district food and civil supply department.

The minister also stated that the delay in the launch of the Act in the state was due to many factors. “We wanted to reach out to the most needy based on the socio-economic census. After due diligence, the process was completed to benefit the people. We have incorporated every section of the society and the people, who are entitled to benefit as mandated in the programme”.

The program according to the minister is inclusive and is set to benefit those that really need help. “The programme will address the hunger of the people. It was a challenging task but we did it. Now the onus lies on the rightful implementation of the programme,” he said.

The launching programme was attended by Manalisa Goswami, DC, Nagaon, Pranab Sharma, DRDA Project director, Nagaon, Anarul Islam, DDS, food and civil supply, Nagaon, Bankim Funglow, area manager, FCI, Nagaon, Pallavi Kachary, circle officer, Raha,and Atafur Rahman, BDO, Raha Block besides a large number of local people and beneficieries.

One held for extortion bid

Acting on a tip off , Raha police on Tuesday arrested one person for trying to extort Rs 8 lakh from one Kanak Nath of Sariohtoli village under Raha revenue circle. Narrow escape for Cong leader

Woman murdered in Raha

A 29-year-old married woman was murdered at her residence at Uttar Petboha village under Raha P.S on Thursday night. Sharp weapon injury marks were found on the neck, breast, and stomach  of the victim,Paree Saikia. When the neighbours reached the spot, the victim was lying on the bed and she had deep slits on her throat. During the investigation by police, it was discovered that nothing was looted from the house, which led them to suspect a personal dispute as the reason. The husband of the woman was not at home when the murder took place, neighbours said. AASU leader passes away

Tapan Das , Headmaster , Nelipar Primary School and a former leader of Raha unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU)  who actively participated in Assam agitation passed away at his house at Chaparmukh following prolonged illness on Tuesday. He was 54. A popular personality of the area, he was loved and respected by all sections of people for his amiable disposition. He leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter. A pall of gloom descended at Raha and Chaparmukh as soon as the news of his demise spread. Different organisations, including Raha AASU unit have mourned Das’s demise.  

Training on soil held at Nagaon

A two days officers training programme on ‘Soil Health Card’ was organized recently at the Regional Agricultural Research Centre ( RARS ) Shillongoni, Nagaon. The training programme was sponsored by State Department of Agriculture Govt. of Assam. Body found on train at Chaparmukh

The body of a man was found on a train that arrived at Chaparmukh junction from Tinisukia on Sunday, police said. The body, found under mysterious condition, was identified as Kiranjyoti Hazarika of Philobari, Tinisukia district. According to Chaparmukh railway police, the deceased was on his way to Guwahati from Tinisulia by the Brahmaputra mail. The cause of the death is yet not confirmed.

Paralyzing bandh in Raha

Normal life remains heavily paralyzed in Raha following a 12 hour bandh by the various local organizations who are dead opposed to the proposed AIIMS in North Guwahati instead of central Assam. Roads in Raha are wearing a deserted look with vehicles refusing to ply under the impact of the bandh. The Nagaon-Guwahati Highway  remained closed as the Middle Assam AIIMS Demand Committee blocked the NH 37 at Raha Chariali for one and half hours on Thursday. More than 600 people including AASU, ATSU , AJYCP, KMSS, Raha unit members and Womens’ organizations blocked the highway standing on the middle of the road shouting slogans against Nagaon MP Rajen Gohain, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma ,  and the state and central government. An escalating tension grips Raha when the authorities deployed heavy security forces on Wednesday a day before the road blockade demanding the proposed AIIMS in this central Assam place instead of Changsari in the outskirt of Guwahati. Continuing its tirade against the setting up of AIIMS hospital at Changsari, Middle Asom AIIMS Demand Committee ( MAADC ) on Sunday  announced a series of agitation against the  state government and state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma.
