Peace rally in Kokrajhar

The Lower Assam NGO Forum, which is a conglomeration of different civil society organizations working in the lower Assam districts, have come together to organize a “Peace and Unity Rally”, today to mark the one year of December 23 NDFB-S massacre in different interior villages in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts.

 The rally also has been joined by hundreds of All Bodo Students Union and All Adivashi Students Associations activists.

Hundreds of Lower Assam NGO Forum members, joined by civil society participated in the rally to protest against the brutal attack and following incidents of violence. The rally which was begun from Rajmela Ground walked through the flyover, Shanti Nagar Path Via DC Office and came back to the same ground.

The Peace and Unity Rally was flagged off by ABSU General Secretary Lorence Islary,  In his sppech Islary said “We stand in solidarity with the victims and also with all the peace loving people. We condemn the last year’s incidents of killing the innocents and appeal the groups involved with such incidents to shun the path of violence. If anyone has grievances they should try to seek redressal through peaceful and democratic means.”

Participating in the rally President, Kokrajhar district unit of AASA Mr. Sefanula Mardi, said “we pray for the eternal peace of the departed souls of unfortunate victims of last year’s violent attack. The culprits are still to be identified and brought to book. Thus, we demand justice from the government”.

While taking part in the rally Raju Kr. Narzary, Executive Director, NERSWN said “If some groups and individuals are in false notion of achieving their goals by killing the innocents and by disturbing the age old socio-cultural ties amongst the ethnic communities, they will achieve nothing but failures”.

Digambar Narzary of NEDAN Foundation while taking part in the rally said “the attack on the poor and innocent people only proves the frustration and cowardliness of the criminal involved with such incidents. We will continue to struggle to bring peace in our region”.

Kusbum Alom Ahmed who participated the rally with his many members of Eco-System Preservation Trust said “Irrespective of the ethnic communities, we stand in solidarity with each other for peace and prosperity. This mammoth rally sends out a strong message to the person who indulges in acts of violence to shun the path of violence and join hands in bringing permanent peace in the region”.

The Lower Assam NGO also took out Candle Light Vigil in four different places in two districts of Kokrajhar and Chirang districts of Kachugaon, Karigaon, Saralpara and Deosri.

Meanwhile, the Bodoland Students’ Union(BSU) also took out a separate bike rally to mark the one year of the massaccre. Over a hundred members from the Union participated in the rally which started from Debargaon. Kokrajhar East MLA Pramila Rani Brahma flagged off the rally. In her speech, Brahma called upon all to shun the path of violence and work for peace and unity.
