Sonowal takes stock of SAG preparation

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Sarbananda Sonowal,Saturdayvisited the 12thSouth Asian Games Guwahati Secretariatat Nidhi Bhawan and took stock of the preparationsfor the upcoming Games.The 12th South Asian Games arescheduledto be held from February 5 to 16, 2016 in the stadia across Guwahati and Shillong respectively. This is the first international multidiscipline sportingevent to be conducted in North East India by the Organizing Committee of the South Asian Games (OC-SAG).

The Minister during his visit met all the 16 Functional Area (FA) heads involved in the run up for the Games. Injeti Srinivas, CEOof theGuwahati Games Secretariat briefed Sonowal the developments in place.The FA heads hashed out all issues pertaining to the preparation of the Games with the Minister who is the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee.

In the meeting, the Minister gave particular importanceto the issues of the Volunteers, Venue Development and Communications Functional Areas. He emphasized that properrepresentation of youths from all the 8 northeastern states should be seen amongst the Volunteers of the Games and suggestedthat the FA give specific attention in this direction.

He opined that the Organizersinvolve and represent the student community, both boys and girls of all the important colleges of Upper Assam, Lower Assam including Barak Valley and Meghalayain the Volunteer force of the Games.

The Minister personally met the workforce and FA Heads of the Games Secretariat to encourage them for the upcoming Games.Expressing confidence in the ongoing preparations hesaid, “All the preparations are on the right track, and everybody is working sincerelyfor the success of these Games so that we can witness a great and successful Games in the North East”.
